  • M105 on 5.0 Mustang GT??? (With Lots of Pics)

I tried posting earlier but it didnt work, so im sorry if this posts twice.

Basically I have a red Mustang GT that does not have a clear coat. I have used many meguiars products in the past on it. Such as Meguairs 80, Show car polish, Gold class wax, as well as the consumer clay bar kit and gold class wash.

I have been considering using Meguiars 105 Compound, but am afraid I may be taking off too much material. I would probably apply this by hand with a foam applicator. (Same way I applied #80) I just want to know what you guys think of me using M105???

Here is my mustang before #80

Here is what I want my stang to look like (hopefully after M105). The guy who owns this told me he used Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound and Meguiars Wax.

Here is what his mustang looked like before the turtle wax rubbing compound!

So, what do you guys think? How can I make my mustang look like his??? (My pics may be a little mis-leading, but trust me, my stang looks no where near as nice as his does!)

Well, just me, but I'd stay from TW rubbing compound. Too much can happen if you're not careful. If you really want to try to get that extra pop, use one of Meguiar's paint cleaners like SwirlX or Ultimate Compound or use an AIO like Color X, follow up with M07, NXT 2.0, and you can top it with #26 if you'd like. I was able to achieve this on my uncle's 1996 Ford Explorer:

Pics are from this thread: http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34170

Process was ColorX, NXT 2.0, and M26. You can view the thread to see the whole process. But I'd try that and see if you like that. M07 is optional - you can add it in between ColorX and NXT 2.0. If you want to use M07, do a test spot first and see if it makes a difference before you do the whole car. Hope this helps!

Are you sure your paint doesn't have a clear coat? Those first few pics show some shine.

Im pretty sure. Whenever I hit it with any compound or polish, just red paint comes up, no white watery type substance. I wax this car alot, everytime I wash it, I wax it, so that may be why it has some shine. But if you lined it up against another mustang with a clear coat, like an 03 cobra or something that was taken care of, my stang would fade to the background.

Has anyone ever tried M105? If so what do you think of it?

Im just worried it will do what ScratchX did to my car. I tested ScratchX and it took the shine or "pop" out of the red and almost made it look faded. It got rid of the scratches, but at the expense of the paints overall appearance.

Meguairs #80 Speed Cut was ten times better! It took out swirls, oxidation, and scratches, as well as enhancing the paint! If M105 is like a suped up version of #80, then Im all for it!

M105 and M80 are two completely different things. One isn't a "suped" up version of the other. Usually, at least my experience anyways, a single stage paint comes out like new with a product like M80, maybe M83 or the new SwirlX (just used it on my SS paint truck, worked great!!!!).

So would you recomend using the M83 Cleaner before stepping up to a compound with a cut like M105? M83 will be a little more aggresive than M80, right?

And what about the Medium, Fine, and Heavy Cut Cleaners M1, M2, and M4? It seems like nobody really uses these.

Megs M80 does have a lot of the megs TS oils, really does work well on single stage paint from what I have read and the reviews I have seen. I have only used M80 on clear coat, does a good job on that as well

Let me sort this out step by step just to keep things simple and organized.

Yes, I would recommend using M83 before trying a full on compound and yes, M83 is a bit more aggressive than M80. M83 is next in line after M80. You would use M83 first, then step up to a more aggressive product such as M105 if needed. That in itself, is more of a leap than a step.

In between M83 and M105, you have in ascending order from less aggressive to more aggressive: Swirl X, ScratchX 2.0 and Ultimate Compound. I just recently used Swirl X on my brown, single stage paint truck and it did a magnificent job.

(Side question: do you have any of the above products already? M80, M83, SwirlX, etc...)

If you have M80, use that on a ~1'x1' test spot and see what happens. If you are satisfied with how the paint looks after that, then you can proceed to do the whole car, then wax. If not, then you have only put that effort into that small spot, not the entire car only to be disappointed after all of that work! M80 also happens to have the most polishing oils out of all Meguiar's Cleaner/Polishes, so you can usually skip the polishing step.

If you don't have M80, or M80 doesn't clean the paint to perfection or your satisfaction for that matter, SwirlX and Ultimate Compound are usually readily available at Wal-Mart. It only costs about $15 for both, so it wouldn't hurt to get them both anyways. You never know when you may need one or the other. Try SwirlX in a test spot and see what happens, then go to Ultimate Compound if needed. I wouldn't expect you'd need anything higher than SwirlX on a single stage paint. They [single stage paints] tend, in my experiences anyways, to be very lending and easily cleanable.

M01, M02 and M04 just don't seem to be in the line up for most people anymore. I picked up some M02 (not cheap compared to some others), used it once, and have not used it since. M83 did a better job (higher cut rating IIRC). Seems to me they are more for shop use with a rotary buffer nowadays. Just my thoughts on the subject of those three products.

                    Hope this helps!

It all depends on the results you are looking for.
If you are looking to reduce swirls and scratches you would use a more aggressive product as needed.
From what I am gathering is that you are looking for shine rather than swirl reduction. So I wouldnt suggest M105. You could use M83 then M80 followed up with M20 or nxt2.0. You could even try a pure polish like M07.
Try different combos and see what you like best.
