  • 5'' Backing Plate and 6.5'' pad?

    Hi Guys,

Sorry about all the questions, I'm still learning and have many things to ask.

I have read a few places that some prefer a 5'' backing plate and 5.5'' pads. My dilemma is that I purchased the PC7424 Kit that consists of a 5'' backing plate and 6.5'' CCS buffing pads. The greater margin for error is nice, but a few people have recomended that I ditch the 6.5'' pads and drop to the 5.5'' pads.

Would it be better to make the switch? or should I just get a 6'' backing plate. Which I have also read causes a little more vibration.

My problem is that I already have 8 pads in 6.5'' (2 of each) between orange, white, grey, and blue. It seems like a cheaper route to go with a bigger backing plate but at the risk of higher vibrations.

I was also looking to buy more pads in the near future, to have more backup pads should the others get used up too fast. When I do decide to purchase these pads- I would like to know what to get.

    Thanks

Re: 5'' Backing Plate and 6.5'' pad?

The Meguiars G110 ships with a 4.75" backing plate, intended for use with Soft Buff 6.5" pads. Meguiars has recently introduced the new W68DA backing plate with a diameter of 5.75", intended specifically for use with the new 7 inch Soft Buff 2.0 pads. The W68DA does have a flexible rubber rim designed for contouring, but it seems that a little "cushion" was intended in the design of both backing plates for precisely the reason you stated.

No need to apologize - you're here to learn and we're here to help. Works out real nice that way!

As for backing plate/pad choices in the future, our new W68DA backing plate was designed to fit directly into the recessed back of our Soft Buff 2.0 pads (W7207, W8207 & W9207) for easy alignment, but also to give that little bit of flex toward the outer edges of the pad for better pad to paint contact. When the time comes for you to replace these items, you will be well served to go this route.

In the meantime, continue using what you have. Thousands of people have used the supplied backing plate with their 7424, G100 and G110 with a wide variety of pads and gotten excellent results. Concentrate on your skills with the machine rather than worrying about the backing plate/pad combo.

Thanks for the replies guys! I feel a little more confident about what I have now.

So far I really like the Lake Country pads. But other Meguiars products have worked so well for me, that I will order those backing plates and pads sometime soon.
