Claying after dealer applied paint protection

I bought a used 2006 Corvette with paint in quite good condition. However, I'd like to smooth it out and really make it shine. The car has dealer applied paint protection on it. Will the clay treatment remove this? Does anyone have a recommendation on my best course of action to achieving a mirror finish. Right now the paint is pretty nice but there are some swirls and roughness from contamination.

Find out what their "protection" is.

Chances are, in order to improve your finish it will need to be removed either way. And chances are also likely that it's not as good as they claim.

Dealer paint protection generally means the applied a paint sealant.

Since its rough and has contamination like you say, I would not worry about the dealer applied sealant and just go ahead and clay your Corvette. That way it has no contamination and you can apply the wax of your choice.

After you clay you can wax but if your looking to remove the swirls and scratches out of the car's finish then you must clean and polish the paint.

You will probably remove what the dealer applied. But if you are not happy about the condition of the finish clay, and apply the wax of your choice.

Check with the dealer wax protection warranty 1st. You may void it if you clay the paint.

If you're going to remove the swirls, you're going to remove anything applied to the paint. There is simply no way around it - the swirls are below the surface of the paint, the applied product is above the surface.

Did the dealer apply this paint protection to this car while on their used car lot and if so, did you pay for it? Or was the paint protection applied back in '06 when the car was new? If it was applied back in '06 then in reality there probably isn't any of it left on the paint. If it was applied by the used car dealer and you paid for it, you might want to talk to them about the fact that the paint was not very well prepped before it was applied. Further mention that in the process of correcting these paint issues, which you obviously want to do, there is no way to avoid removing the product they sold you. While odds are slim that they will refund any of your money, you can at least get a point across. Maybe.

If ever there was a reason to avoid these dealer applied paint protection, poor prep before application is it.
