  • Tire Treatments

I have not dressed my tires in awhile but for some reason I decided to give the Meguiars Tire Dressing a try. I followed the directions quite carefully but now I have noticed that the tires slung an oily residue up onto the paint and also on the wheels. Are there any methods to use for application that will prevent this. The dressing I used was a purple gel that I have had for some time. I think the reason I quit using the product was this residue that I am referring to. Any suggestions will be welcome.

    Thanks,

Sounds like there was either excess product or it wasn't dry yet. I like to buff the tires after dressing with a MF towel. Wiping them down with a towel would definitely remove excess. Or you could just let the product dry completely before driving off.

I applied the product in the sun and attempted to let it dry. I also buffed the tires after they had sat for awhile. It sounds like I didn't buff them firmly enough. Are you saying that when you use this product you don't have the same problems at all? I love the look but I can't stand that oily residue on my paint or wheel wells.

      Thanks for the information.

GC Endurance gel? Whatever it is , it sounds like you had excess product. Just try buffing them firmly with an MF. After buffing you should be able to tell if there's any product left that could sling.

But to answer your question, yes i have experienced tire sling before. But that's why i now either wait for the dressing to fully dry or i buff it off, or do both. Also, try to avoid applying dressings in direct sunlight. It can sometimes change the finished look or not allow the dressing to do it's thing.

Did you clean your tires before applying the dressing? Ive found that when you really clean the tire it helps to give the dressing a nice clean surface to soak into. But I also let it dry and then wipe off the access and usually dont have a problem. I just got some Hyper Dressing and have not seen any sling with it. Maybe try out some other dressings to figure out what will work best for your tires.

Yeah, cleaning the tires (and more than soapy water) can be important.

Make sure your tires are clean. Use less product. Finally after 20-30 minutes give them a final wipedown to remove excess product.

Thanks for the info. I did clean the tires with Westleys Bleach white. They were very clean. Next time I'll let it sit for awhile before I wipe them down and I'll do so with more force. It does seem strange that they would dry better in the shade than in the sun but you guys know the product better than I do.

                Thanks again,

hi,i've never had that problem at all.It sounds like you have put an excessive amount of tyre dressing on your tyres and not wiped off properly. That's the only thing that I can think of.

Hi murr,Talking about cleaning tyres.i put in a suggestion/question in a thread that was kicked off by Tuck91. It should be on the first page.I havn't tried this, though. In the past I've used degreaser(as a heavy duty soap) and elbow grease and they did come clean before i applied the dressing.

Many tire designs have those grooved sipes in the sidewall which hold excess dressing and leads to sling if not buffed out. I use a terry covered applicator to wipe them so as to remove excess product. A thin even coat of tire dressing won't sling once it dries.
