  • Plastic ABS

Hi everyone, just came across Mike's suggestion for treating ABS plastic parts. 'Mustang with louvered rear window cover'

Firstly, that came really nice! Excellent satin shine!

I agree that these matt plastic parts (found on so many cars today),accent the rest of the car as mentioned. Although there is no perfect solution,if left for too long they become a horrible dull grey(bleached out effect).

I personally don't like these parts(as they are) because of this problem. On my old civic,i resorted to spraying with a matt black.(When i get some time,i'm going to do the part under the windshield).I did the front grill and a custom rear diffuser(not part of the original civic) about 3 years ago and has stood the test of time so far.I used a spray can intended for plastics, which is matt/satin. I've had a little bit of peeling at edges at a couple of points, probably because at some point in the past,I used a 'silicon' based product to coat these parts.

As soon as I can,I'll back this up with photos(exams!).Also,i've still got the spray can.So i can provide the name of the product(which is solely intended for direct spray of ABS plastics).

Are all the Meguiar's line of plastic cleaner, protectant, detailer etc.. free of silicon?

I've been using 'natural shine',the one in the red spray bottle, and found it to work fine aswell.

    Bye,Eddie.

The problem with paint adhesion problems is more than just silicone. Any substance that could make water bead for example could cause paint not to stick. As for which product have silicone and which product don't, I don't know as we don't share formulas or ingredients on public forums.

(I don't think any wax manufacture shares secrets on public forums?)

Unlike most of the other web-based wax companies and their product offerings, Meguiar's is a long-time, major supplier of product to the refinishing industry and as such a lot, not all, but a lot of our Professional Line paint care products are "Body Shop Safe", that means they contain no ingredients that will have a negative effect on surface adhesion when new paint is sprayed onto the car.

That would include paint care products in our Professional Line, like M105 and M205

As for doing your own paint work on your own car, always clean and prep any part correctly before painting. This is a standard practice at any reputable body shop.

Hi mike, and thanks for the explanation.I understand what you mean about a companies formula etc.I asked because some products do state on the back that it's silicon free.
Yes,when i painted the parts, certain parts were removed from the car and washed thoroughly and masked off.
The part at the bottom of the windshield(which is still bare) has faded a lot,and if i put any plastic trim products on it,it does improve it's appearance but not the way i'd like to be.Just age and lack of attention1

      Thanks,Eddie.
