  • New DA project-Which product now?

The new G110 just arrived and I had little fear of giving it a go since I had spent so much time reading here over the last six months. Now, just as quickly, I am at a stop, lol.

Project car: 1991 Dodge Spirit, dark metallic blue, all stock and original except it was repainted eight years ago with the same color and it is clear coated. The car was never washed, polished or waxed until I got it six months ago. It was driven very little but did set outside up against a house. The paint job is not real good as you can see light, almost white looking spots in a few areas. It seems to be primer that was not fully covered by the blue paint? It feels smooth. There are a few deep scratches and chips that will remain, and they appear white as well.

When I got this car, six months ago, I clayed it, used ScratchX all over, Deep Crystal Polish and NXT liquid wax, all by hand and the car looked good but the more I learn here, the more I see the faults. The biggest problem is that the paint has little clarity. The mirror image is like a bit foggy or cloudy. But not real bad. I was hoping the new DA would clear it right up, and it may or may not. The problem I have is not being able to properly evaluate the situation. This is new to me.

What I did today was, after washing, clay the trunk again, tape off a test area and then go over it with the DA and ScratchX 2.0 for my first DA trial. An area about 14 X 18". The product was applied to a MEG polishing pad in an 'X' and made three slow passes before it appeared to be drying up. That was wiped off and the paint looked not much different so I did another three passes and wiped that off. No big change still. There was a rather nasty scratch/pit area in there that was nicely buffed out though, 80%. But the paint is still cloudy, and there are a few small splotches of discoloration, like maybe an old bird dropping? They can barely be seen though.

So now, I wonder what to do next. ScratchX 2.0 does not seem to be the ticket. I have on hand some Ultimate Compound, which I read is more agressive, and also some ColorX which I read is less agressive. I was thinking of trying the UC on the same area next. I really feel like M105 might be the thing though. There is none of that here but I could order some if need be.

I do not have a camera so I cannot show you guys what I have here. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    On hand:
    ScratchX & ScratchX 2.0
    ColorX
    Ultimate Coumpound
    Deep Crystal Polish
Deep Crystal Cleaner/Wax (came with the clay)
    NXT Liquid wax
    DA G110
6.5" Polishing & Finishing pads (plenty)

If you don't have any M105 try the UC then the NXT wax. I have had great results with M105 w/ yellow pad and then M205 w/ yellow pad followed by NXT wax.

I would be worried that some of the haziness, esp white spots, may be clear coat failure, which you would be unable to fix.

Perhaps you could check out the ClearCoat Failure Archive, and see some examples to compare.

Posted this recently here, but the info applies here,

Try again using a yellow polishing pad on the 5.0 speed setting. Mark the back of your pad and even backing plate if you want like this so you can easily see if the pad is rotating or just vibrating.

        Technique
Quickly spread the product out of the surface you're going to work then slow your arm speed down and begin to use overlapping motions to work the product.

For this test, only work a section about 16" squarish, don't tackle too large of an area at one time. The tool is gentle in it's abrading action and can only effectively remove paint from small sections at a time when move the polisher slowly over the surface with the firm pressure.

In most cases, you want to apply as much pressure as you can while still maintaining a fairly fast rate of rotating speed. What you don't want to do is apply so much pressure that the pad rotates s-l-o-w-l-y.

Overlap your passes by 50% and do your best to keep the pad flat to the surface. If the pad is held at an angle so there's uneven pressure applied to the face of the pad this will keep the pad from rotating. (test this yourself and you'll see how important it is to hold the pad flat).

After working an application of product, wipe the leftover residue from the worked area and inspect, if the results look good move onto a new section overlapping a little into the previous section. Continue this procedure until you have finished a panel or the entire vehicle.

If you're not seeing what you want to see, the post back here and we'll do our best to help out...

And if you haven't already, read through this...

If you're moving up to machine polishing, be sure to read the below thread before starting...

            (These are all similar tools)

The new ScratchX 2.0 has the ability to do some pretty good correction work but if you still find it's not working fast or effectively enough for you then definitely get some Ultimate Compound and give that a try doing another test spot.

Aggressiveness Order for New Consumer Products - This will surprise you!

Since we introduced these 3 new swirl and scratch removers in our Consumer Line and our new M205 Ultra Finishing Polish in our Professional line, many people have asked how aggressive these new products are as compared to some of our existing products that our forum members are already familiar with to help them understand the cleaning and/or abrading ability of these new products I've listed them in order of most aggressive to least aggressive reading from left to right.

(Apologies ahead of time if you have to horizontal scroll)

Most aggressive to least aggressive -->

That would be from most to least aggressive,

Check out what you're seeing against the pictures in the below thread, if this problem area on your car is on a horizontal surface and matches one of the pictures in the below thread then that's clear coat failure and there's nothing you pour out of a bottle or scoop out of a can that's going to fix it.

Re: New DA project-Which product now?

Thanks, guys. After looking at all the pictures and video, I feel that my arm speed and product application was good. But after a lot of thought, I think it is quite possible that I was not rotating because of too much pressure. For run #2, I will mark the pad to be sure it is rotating, and try ScratchX 2.0 on a different test area before going to UC. Again, I am working on cloudiness mostly.

The clear coat pictures really look nothing like what I see. My spots are barely noticeable and look to me like a lack of blue paint over the light color primer. There are three spots of it and one of them appears where paint spraying technique seems likely to be the cause. That is along the 90 degree bend of the trunk lid where it goes from horizontal to vertical, and the top of the rear bumper seems to be not completely covered. Whatever it is, it is there to stay and it feels completely slick and is not terribly noticible except under close observation, and no color comes off from the spots. This is not a show car but rather one to develop my skills and give me something enjoyable to do. I wish it were single stage paint but...I can remember back in the early 80s when MEG polish worked almost like compound on single stage paint!

It is 3am now but later this morning, I will try again and be sure I have rotation. I am pretty sure I did not before. Thanks again!

Re: New DA project-Which product now?

Wow! What a difference a day makes!
Earlier, I marked the pad and found that it takes almost nothing to stop it from rotating so, I feel sure that it was stopped most of the time yesterday. The trunk lid was divided into four equal test areas yesterday, with #2 having been the one used-two apps of ScratchX 2.0. There was little if any change in it.
Today, I adjusted the amount of product. A bit more so that I can do four passes and it still is not drying up. Also used little more than the weight of the DA and worked the next area, #3 with ScratchX 2.0. The result was amazing! It was very clear! So then, I divided that area in half and applied a second app of ScratchX 2.0 to one half, and that result was shocking to me. Very clear!

So now, I can look side by side at three test areas:
                  1- original
2- ScratchX 2.0 (two apps) from yesterday (poor technique, not enough product, too much pressure causing rotation to stop)
                  3- ScratchX 2.0 one application-today, better technique
                  4- ScratchX 2.0 two applications-today

Moving my head across these areas, it is like a multi-brightness lamp getting a click brighter at each one. Clarity and detail is very good with two apps of ScratchX 2.0 and better technique.

My question now is: Considering I only have two experiences with the DA, and much to learn, should I continue with a third app of ScratchX to try for even greater improvement or go right to UC? ScratchX is expensive, lol!
It would take a lot of ScratchX to do the entire car even with two apps, which does look very good. Maybe UC would do it in one app.

Also, I plan to go to the paint shop and get their opinion about just exactly what those light areas are once the car is finished. I used to paint a bit and it looks just like when you are covering up something and it just needs another coat, more paint to cover. At any rate, I am not concerned about it as it is there to stay and barely noticable.

I think I will now go try UC on area #4 and see what happens.

Re: New DA project-Which product now?

                    Case closed!

One app of UC equaled or exceeded the clarity of the best (two app) ScratchX 2.0 test area, which was awesome. Dividing the UC area in half, and applying a second app of UC on one half was even much better. In fact, it was 'Good Enough!" A perfect mirror now! Beautiful and clear. The second app of UC was well worth it so, it will be twice over the car now with UC. Perhaps M105 would even do a bit better but I will never know because I am totally happy with the double app of UC. It works great too. I like it better than using ScratchX 2.0. It is thinner and easier to work (for me, lol). This is some amazing stuff! It will be topped with two coats of NXT liquid wax/DA. I am planning to do one panel at a time, clay, UC then two coats of wax. Glory be, I never would have guessed that the paint could ever look like this! Thanks guys for all the posts and teaching that finally got me to this point. I am amazed and delighted!

Re: New DA project-Which product now?

                        Thanks, Murr1525

I just cannot say enough about that Ultimate Compound! The work day is over now and I just came in. Before I stopped outside, I decided to see what UC would do with a bad, bad scratch on the rear corner (lookout house!) so I put a dab on the pad and hit it until the product was spent. The scratches were all but gone! UC also did away with a couple other bad places that were 'untouchable' in the past. So then I went to the side where something had scraped it long ago and left a deep whitish scratch about 14" long to experiment further. This scratch had been worked on countless times in the last six months with old ScratchX. Even with one finger in a T-shirt! It never got much better and was the worst blemish in the paint. You guessed it! One app with UC/DA (til used up) and now I cannot even find it without looking very hard in the right light! I am sure that another app and it will be history. This UC is about the most amazing thing I have ever seen. My 'practice project' is actually turning into something quite unbelievable, lol. The DA is getting very handy and easy to use now. I am cleaning the pad after every app and can see a big improvement in the quality already as I learn how to use it by instinct and 'feel'. What a wonderful tool!

Question please: How long is too long to wait to apply wax after finishing with UC? I suppose the paint begins to oxidize or something immediately? Would a couple days be OK or not? Even longer? The car would be staying in the garage. Thanks again, guys!

Based on the sounds of your paint, you might want to apply a pure polish of some sort after the UC, and then wax. The sooner the better of course.

                            Thanks again, Muirr1525.

That is what I figured would be the case. Later today, I expect to finish the trunk lid with UC and I have some DC liquid polish here that I will apply right over it then. There is also some ColorX here but I assume the DC polish would be best to use?

Also, just wanted to note that while I had the trunk lid open, I wound up cleaning out the trunk with a vacuum, for a break, and under there, I could clearly see a few small places (factory, I think) where the color of the coat under the dark blue top coat is indeed a very light blue, almost whitish color. This was good to see since it reinforces my belief that the few 'whitish' looking spots are insufficient coverage of top coat rather than clear coat failure. But, I am at a loss to understand how that long deep light colored scratch was able to be removed yesterday with UC since it looked 'whitish'. At any rate, I am very happy! Thanks again!

You could use ColorX, and then just need one coat of wax. That makes it nice for future quick details as well.

Just thinking that using a pure polish to get some extra oils into/onto the paint might be a good idea, at least this time around. And then 2 coats of Nxt 2.0, etc.
