  • some quick questions...

so over the past few months, i've bought some great meguiar's products without really thinking about the steps...

    I have: clay kit
    deep crystal polish
    colorx
    nxt 2.0 paste wax

I'm not sure how to use those products on a (new for me) car with poor finish.

I've detailed my newer cars with great paint with just clay bar and wax, but i've neve used polish nor colorx.

How should I go about doing my other car? It has very dull paint, noticeable swirls (black paint) and some paint chips.

I was thinking: wash, clay, colorx.... but where can i fit in the polish? or should i buy something else like paint cleaner? please help. i should have thought this through way before, but it was winter

    Re: some quick questions...

    Hi, mujjuman.

After washing and claying your car, what you might want to do is a test spot with your ColorX. Follow these instructions:

Apply the ColorX using either soft foam or soft microfiber applicator pads and only do a section about a foot squared. Work the ColorX like you would rub a skin lotion onto your skin. Use an ample amount of product, that is your surface should be wet with product as you're relying on the diminishing abrasives to remove very small particles of paint off the car in an effort to level the surface. After applying and working the product to this small area allow it to complete dry and then wipe it off and inspect.
If the paint looks good to you, ColorX the rest of the car. After the ColorX, you could, if you wanted, apply the DC Polish (optional step), or you could go directly to NXT (which is what I would do, FWIW).

But if you are not satisfied with the ColorX test spot, then you will want to run down to the store and buy a bottle of SwirlX and Ultimate Compound. Repeat the test spot with these products, beginning with Swirl X, the least aggressive of the two. If SwirlX does not produce satisfactory results, try the UC. UC should have the car looking much better. If you are happy with the results, then proceed to do the entire car.

Polishing a car by hand is hard and long work. Give yourself plenty of time to do the job.

After you have polished the car, you could apply the DC Polish, or you could move directly to NXT (two coats).

    Good luck and have fun!

    Cheers,
    Al

Thank you so much for the reply! I will do that and report back.

I'm guessing that SwirlX is more "powerful" than ColorX (lack of better word)

        Yes.

Be sure to take some pics of your detailed car. Hope all goes well.

          Re: some quick questions...

Ok so I'm done with the car... Unfortunately, I dont have a working camera so I cannot take pics!

The worst part of my car is the hood, the rest of the car is in pretty good condition.
I clayed the entire surface after washing it, and then I put some ColorX on part of my hood. My hood is so many bad scratches, many swirls, rock chips, etc... So anyway, the first time I did it, the hood just got blacker, with the swirls and scratches intact. Then I did it about 2 to 3 more times. It took out most of the swirls, with some deeper scratches left behind. I think the only way to fix that is to repaint or to buy another hood. Not worth it for this car, unless I can get one for free.

Anyway, I used ColorX on the rest of the car, and its great! Got rid of most swirls, and it made my paint look blacker, but unfortunately, it got really dark so I could not see the finished result. I will wait until tomorrow morning to see it.

Maybe I should buy SwirlX and Ultimate Compound and see what effect it has on my paint.

            Re: some quick questions...

If you couldnt get a good look at it, it is also possible some swirls got covered up and they may re-appear.

I would at least try SwirlX, it is mild, so will certainly be used more in the future.

Yeah right now I'm really hoping the swirls on the rest of the car are gone.
