  • Scratches on Toyota Sienna 04

my van has some scratches I thought I could remove with a DA, so I bought a Mequiars G110 but I didn't get much luck. I think these are are repairable because they don't feel like all the way down to the metal. It must be that I didn't try the DA properly.

I saw a tsb from Toyota that talks about scratches and the kind of paint they put on their vehicles, an excerpt from the tsb is as follows:

    "Introduction:
Most colors on Toyota vehicles sold in the U.S. use a combination of scratch resistant
and/or acid rain resistant exterior (body color) paint finishes. These types of finishes
provide improved resistance to minor scratching and acid rain.
This bulletin outlines the precautions that should be taken when polishing or refinishing
    anti–scratch automotive type paint surfaces.

    Polishing Tips for Anti–Scratch Finishes:
Since this type of paint technology is meant to resist scratching, it is important to understand that sanding and polishing to remove scratches is quite difficult and will require significantly more time to finesse the paint surface to achieve an acceptable appearance.
Use an ultra–fine grit sandpaper to remove scratches.
Soak sandpaper in soapy water for at least one hour (overnight preferred) prior to sanding the paint surface (this will reduce the possibility of rescratching the paint surface).
Use polishing compounds and materials specifically designed to be used with clearcoated urethane paint finishes.
    "

I will try to post a pic of the scratches later, in the meantime maybe someone can give me some tips to this rookie with not enough experience. I used the DA with the M20512 Ultra Finishing Polish I got with the G110 kit but couldn't remove the scratches. I only did the application once or maybe twice.

Again, will try to post a picture but wondering what could I try safely as a rookie. I do not see swirls in the paint.

I used the washable yellow polishing foam pad.

I think you're trying to outdo yourself. Try Scratch X 2.0 with a foam applicator pad (by hand) and try to get the scratches out that way. Read through this thread:

How to use ScratchX by hand to remove swirls, scratches and water spot etchings

Though in this case you'd be using Scratch X 2.0 instead of the old Scratch X. Remember the MOL rule: "Always use the least aggressive method first." You can always bump up to the G110 if you can't achieve the desired results by hand. Hope this helps!

Geek, I had a similar problem with my daily driver '02 Mustang. Bounty hooked me up with the following process:
      1. Wash
      2. Clay
      3. DA w/ M105 w/yellow pad
      4. DA w/ M205 w/yellow pad
      5. DA w/ NXT Tech Wax 2.0 w/black finishing pad

It rained today so I didn't want to get it wet yet. Remember M105 is more aggressive than M205. Also, if the car is your daily driver remember if you do two complete passes with M105 then the next logical step is wet sanding. I didn't do this to the '02 because that was beyond my level of knowledge. Hope this helped.

Went to Walmart and only saw Swirl X, is this good to try ?
I know the other Walmart in my area has the Scratch x/2 but wanted to know if this Swirl X is worth the shot or not.
