  • New Paint Job: Itching To Detail

So I just got a new paint job for my car to deal with numerous rock chips and scratches from its rallycrossing days (before I got into pampering the car). It's a 2005 Mazda RX-8, and the color is Titanium Grey.

The new paintjob was done at the dealership's bodyshop, so I'm guessing they're using the exact same paint as the factory, minus the 300 C baking process.

Anywho, I know I can't wax for 90 days to let the paint cure/gas-out. However, I'm seriously itching to do some detailing, and I don't know what is "new paint safe" and what isn't.

Usually, when I do a full detail, I do the following steps:
    1. Wash
    2. Smooth Surface Clay Kit
    3. Deep Crystal System Polish
    4. Gold Class Wax
    5. Maintain with Ultimate Quik Detailer.

I'm guessing step 4 is out of the equation. However, I'm particularly curious if UQD and the normal QD in the SSCK is safe for new paint?

Note that I just got my car back from the bodyshop after they messed up the first time around on Friday. It is not parked in a garage, but is parked in a shaded car port. I can't use machine applied products because the apartment does not have a socket near the car port.

Meguiar's polishes are same for newer paint. UQD is safe as well.

You can clay if you'd like, and you can use M07 Show Car Glaze to maintain the shine (and give you something to do to your car) until the curing process is over. For more info on M07, see the sites below:

I am not sure if UQD is recomended for fresh paint.

You could pick up a little #80, it has a fresh paint safe polymer in it, for a little protection. Not the same as a wax, but better than nothing.

What about just normal maroon bottle QD?

          What's the name of #80? I can't find it on Meguiar's website.

            Regular QD is fine.

              Speed Glaze, I think.....

UQD is not safe for paint! Those wonderful polymers (IIRC) will seal the paint and not let it do it's thing.

Re: New Paint Job: Itching To Detail

A few months ago I asked the question about the use of quick detailers on fresh paint. In reply Mike Pennington recommended the use of Final Inspection (M34), as it is expressly formulated for this purpose. I presume that the silicone in QD, UQD, M135, and Last Touch might possibly interfere with the fresh paint's out-gassing. I would therefore suggest that you avoid QD and UQD during your 90 day waiting period.

As Mat mentioned, you might consider gently applying some M80 Speed Glaze for minimal protection, as it has paintable polymers in it (see this thread). I waited for 30 days before I did this, as I wanted to give the paint sufficient time to completely harden. I followed Tim Lingor's directions. I allowed it to set up for 10-15 minutes and then removed it with a microfiber towel.

And if you still need to do something during this excruciatingly long waiting period, you can regularly apply one of Megs' pure polishes (e.g., Deep Crystal Polish, M07, M81, M05). It will make the paint look great, and you won't feel so useless.

                Cheers,

How about an AIO like D151 (Paint Reconditioning Cream). Isn't that supposed to be body shop safe for new paint jobs?

Not while the paint is "curing" Like you said it is a all in one. One of the aspects is wax. Can't use it yet.

I would go with #7, or #80 till the paint is out gassed completely.

I am mistaken, do not use UQD. I am sorry for the bad advice.
