  • Gilmour Foam Gun

Just watched the video on safely washing your car and had a question...

I just started a detailing company with my buddy and we use the Gilmour Foam Gun instead of the 2 bucket method. Keep in mind we do use 2 sheeps wool wash mitts and follow the steps in the video.

But I was just wondering which is a better method, if both are just as effective, or, if the foam gun isn't what it's cracked up to be? Thoughts?

    Re: Gilmour Foam Gun

I do not know that I would ever go back to the single bucket method, even if I did have a foam gun. To me it is just a really good peace of mind knowing that I'm doing all I can to keep contaminants off of my car.

I can not comment on the foam gun, I do not have one, from what I hear alot of people have good results with them, a very good presoak to loosen up paint debris.

For those who like using a foam gun it's not a bad idea to still keep a single rinse bucket on hand, with a grit guard of course, to rinse the wash mitt between panels/sections when washing. Best of both worlds, win/win, yadda yadda yadda.

You aren't thinking of steam cleaning the paint on your car, are you? If so, don't - you'll take the wax off. If not, what are you trying to accomplish?

Whether you're using 2 buckets, 1 bucket, etc. the main part of the wash, in my opinion, is actually rinsing out your wash media with the hose for 5-10 seconds (when doing maintenance washes, I will do this before dumping the wash media in the 'rinse' bucket and on initial washes before a correction I'll only use the wash bucket and rinse the wash media with the hose)... I always thought foam guns were best used before a good 2 bucket wash in that you spray on the foam, it loosens some of the dirt, etc., rinse it off by hosing it down, then proceed with the 2 bucket...

Yeah, assuming just light dirt, I will wash a panel/door with one side of my mitt, then the next panel with the other side, then go to my rinse bucket with a Grit Guard to rinse off both sides.

Then soap down the next panel and mitt with the gun, wash, etc.

I'm confused on how people managed to use the foam gun to substitute for a wash bucket.

My thought was that the foam gun should only be used to loosen dirt, as someone mentioned I believe. It's a "pre-soak" cycler, if you were to go to a coin op wash.

Well, I can only say what I do.

If the car is super dirty, like in winter, I may "pre-soak".

But usually, I just wash like normal. Only the soap comes from the gun instead of a soap bucket.

So, I would rinse the car, then like usual, I would start at the roof. I'll soap half the roof with the gun, soap the mitt, and wash. Then soap the windows, pillars, flip the mitt over, soap it, and wash them. Then go to the rinse bucket.

Then, I'll soap half the trunk, soap the mitt, and wash. Then soap the other half, flip the mitt, soap it, and wash. Then back to the rinse bucket.

Hope that makes sense? Its just spraying soap where you want it instead of holding/squeezing a soapy sponge. And then rinsing soap off when needed.

It makes sense, and to me sounds more effective because it saturates the dirt particles and aids to loosen them, where as with the traditional method the particles are only soaked/loosed as the mit passes over them.

                          Re: Gilmour Foam Gun

Really, I don't worry about the "cleaning".

It just seems to me (I may be crazy) that the soap foam from the gun hangs around on the panel a bit, even just a few seconds longer, which means I can catch it with my mitt as I wash the surface. That means my lubrication is hanging around longer.

It always just seemed I would drip half my soap from the mitt on the way to the car, and then the rest would run right out and off the car when I put it on the panel. Which means I dont have as much lubrication.

Now, maybe the foam makes it look like there is more soap than there actually is, but I feel better. And I use about the same amount of soap for a wash, and it is all on the car, so it cant be too far off.

I use 2 buckets AND a foam gun. I like to preserve my finish as long as possible and I don't mind a little extra work to do that. (Neither do my clients )
