  • Wheels and Exhaust Tip Help

Well Its been a while since Ive had a chance to really detail my car all out and My wheels and exhaust tips are in need of some advice, well I am haha

Car is a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis (106k miles)

Wheels are factory original and have seen every IL winter sadly so maybe I need to have them refinished but I figured Id ask first.

Here are some pictures of em.

As for the exhaust tips they are official mercury marauder tips which means they are Polished Stainless and 26" Long

I think most of the damage is road tar and tires but Ive tried bug and tar remover to no avali so Im asking the great Meguiars Online Community for some advice.

My dad has an extensive collection of meguiars products but Id rather ask everyone here for their advice first

The wheels look like painted/clearcoated? Yo uwill have to check to be sure.

If so, the spots where paint is missing, cant be improved. Do you have any idea what caused the yellllow staining?

As far as the tips, its hard to get the tar off completley.

I would give it one more go with Bug and Tar, letting it sit for a minute or two. Then wash them off with something like the Hot Rims Aluminum Wheel Wash or Multu-Piece Wheel Wash. Then polish them up with the Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum polish.

If nothing else works on the exhaust tips, you could try 0000 grade steel wool and soak it in glass cleaner. This was recently discussed on an Autopia thread.

Yeah the wheels are aluminum which I believe means they were painted then clear coated.

As for the yellow staining I'm thinking it might of been using a wheel cleaner not designed for alum wheels and maybe allowing it to set to long? Ive tried wet sanding em with 1500 grit to remove the stains but that didn't help, I didn't want to go much rougher unless I knew it was safe.

I will have to give the steps a try for the exhaust tips, they were so shiny at one time it would be nice to get some of that back.

When I first got em picture ^
