  • Need help with RIDS on hard paint.

I have these scracthes around my car and I want them out. Yeah I know white is boring and yada, yada, yada but now that I know they are there I think they even call for my attention.

They are more noticeable in the trunk section but if I look around they are all over.

So far I have tried SwirlX, and ScratchX by hand and Ultimate Compund by hand and G110 (from an Autopian local) to no avail. Since these did not make the RIDS bulge I believe I have hard paint.

Is M105 the next logical approach? I am going machine this time as in my previous attempts with the consumer line in this paint did not give me results and all I was left was with a sore arm/hand.

I have a G110 + pads on order already but just wondering if my approach is correct. Comments welcome.

What kind of car is it?

Perhaps someone else has worked on it.

Assuming Ultimate Compound was used with proper technique, then yes, M105 is your best bet if the UC didn't even budge it.

Can you try and explain in detail what your technique was when using the machine? Ie, how much pressure, how fact you were moving, and how long you worked it?

I would step up to the 105.

Let us know the type of pad, speed you were using with the other products.

All products I mentioned above were tried on a quarter section of the trunk.

I applied by hand using both a MF applicator and some cotton terry towels. I focused on a smaller area about 6" squared and put as much passion as I could (only lasted about 30 to 45 secs ). Did a couple of passes like that without seeing any improvement.

For the machine application, I tried at some one else's place with UC on a larger area of the trunk. He had an orange LC pad ~5". I would say I was using about 5-10 lbs of pressure. IIRC he set up the speed (3 for spread and like 5 for polishing) Not 100% sure.... it was quick and just a few passes. I did about four passes (not inlcuding the first spread). So from left to right horizontally, then up and down vertically with some overlapping. Then one more repeat.

          Does that sound ok?

The work you did by hand sounds right, only thing I am unsure of is how quickly you were moving the buffer across the paint (if you go really fast with a DA it doesn't have time to work).

But, if it didn't work by hand with passion, it is unlikely to be much different by DA.

I suggest stepping up to M105 (DA approved formula).

Keep us posted. We will find a solution!

If you did a good job by hand and you didn´t see any improvements at all then it could be that the DA won´t do much in your situation.

I´ve worked on some Mercedes Benz, some scratches can be removed pretty quickly but the ones that are left behind (like in your case) I´ve had great success with a rotary buffer.

Give M105 a try, hand application very small section with a terry cloth towel and follow it with a foam pad. Maybe tape of the section to see if you have improved something.
