  • Headlight problems

    Good Morning Meguiar's Garage,
I had to replace the right side headlight on my wife's Windstar due to a broken seal allowing condensation to accumulate. Now the RH light shows the cloudiness of the LH light Anyway, does anyone have a recommended procedure/product to clear up the other light? I was thinking ScratchX and elbow grease. Thanks.
    Lee

    Hey,

Is the cloudiness on the inside or the outside?

If it is on the inside (cause by condensation), is there an opening on the back of the light large enough to get your hand into? If not, cleaning the lights from the outside with something like Meguiar's PlastX will not remove the cloudiness as it is most likely on the inside. Sorry

      Tim,
The cloudiness appears to be on the outside of the LH light, there is no sign of any condensation or moisture in the LH light.

        Hey,

That is good news! In that case, I would suggest Meguiar's PlastX. You will need to REALLY work the product in until there is only a slight residue left. Then, wipe off with a MF towel. This may take a few applications.

Good luck and keep us posted!

            Just to chime in...

PlastX is a GREAT product. It usually creates a dramtic change and only takes a couple of minutes. Definitely one of my favorite parts of detailing a car!

            Good luck!

If the cloudiness turns out being on the inside of the housing there is a cheaper solution than buying another new light. There should be a shop in your town somewhere that specializes in automotive head light/tail light housings. To get to the inner part of the housing they have to heat it up in an oven to just the right temperature to melt the glue and pull the pieces apart (do not attempt this on your own). Then they polish the inner surface and put it back together (reheat). If it bothers you that much it's an option to keep in mind.
              Later,
              Ricky

Wow!!! That's a huge improvement!!! So, do you think the professional line plastic products will work better?

I was under the impression that PlastX is actually more aggressive than the pro line clear plastic products. And from personal experimentation I believe it. PlastX has a very powerful diminishing abbrasive in it.

I agree, I use plastic x on my fog lights. I really makes a difference. Plus it is so easy.

                      Hey,

As I said, the PlastX needs to be really worked in well. It is not a wipe-on, wipe-off product. The diminishing abrasives need to be broken down which will require some elbow work.

I have also had great success using it with the PC and a W-9006 Finishing Pad.

Here is my wife's car in the dead of winter:

Here is the car after a thorough cleaning and the headlights buffed with the PC, W-9006 and PlastX!!

The customer service rep said to me that PlastX would do a better job (even though its a one step product) than the Pro line. I was a bit shocked by that statement. Usually one would rather use individual steps over a one step product. I took his word for it, order PlastX and you can see the difference.

                        Thanks for the props.
