  • M105 and pad question???

Just got a bottle of the new M105 compound and it came with the 7 inch purple foam pad. Problem is my only large backing plate for my Makita fits the 8 inch pad and won't go into the recess of the smaller pad. I have the yellow 8 inch pad, can I use that for now until I obtain a smaller BP? I am assuming the compound may not cut as fast or as aggressively with the yellow pad but will it still remove RIDS and marring or should I just wait for the correct equipment? Also I know 205 is the suggested follow up polish but does anyone know if Optimum Polish or the new Optimum Finish will clean up the compounding marks? I already have both of those products in my arsenal. I don't want to own too many different products that do a similar job.

Yes. Run the buffer around the 1500 rpm range and clean your pad often.

Machine compounding will tend to remove all the shallow scratches and swirls and then reveal to your eyes the RIDS which will be left behind.

Removing RIDS usually requires more work and a different approach either sanding the random, individual scratches out and then removing your sanding marks, (Feathersanding),

    Feathersanding

Or working the RIDS out by hand because your 4 fingers can exert a lot of force to a small area.

Do a Test Spot after the M105 step.

Tape two sections of a panel off and then test the two products out on one side of the taped sections.

Buff with the Optimum products in the two test sections, remove the residue and then inspect and compare the results with the results from only M105 and let the results guide your next step or another question posted here.

If I can feel the scratch with my fingernail then I am beyond the feathersanding approach right? Vehicle is an 06Rav4 daily driven so perfection is probably not possible but I would still like that new car look for a few more years to come.

I love 105 but its a pain to remove. I am using a DA and cutting pad, it works great but I have to put in some serious elbow grease to remove. Has anyone else had these problems? Does anyone know any tricks when working with 105? Thanks!

Oh and Mike if you see this, what BP do I need exactly for that 7 inch purple pad. The local shop I went to today is just getting into Meguiars and weren't sure what fits. Nothing on their shelves except 3M BP and while one did sort of fit the price was crazy...and getting it to center looked like a PITA.

Leave the RIDS alone, that's a technique and procedure for show cars, not daily drivers. Just removing the zillions of light swirls will give you that show car look without having to go extreme with the paint.

Somethings wrong with your technique. We used M105 at the class you were at this last Saturday and it wiped off just fine.

Are you copying the techniques we went over in the class here,

You can probably use a small rotary backing plate like the one we offer for our small foam pads.

            W68 Backing Plate New!
W66 "Easy Buff" Rotary Backing Plate - This is for our Solo Pads but should work with the purple pad you have.
W64 5" Rotary Buffer Backing Plate

You can order the above online or get one at a PBE store, if they don't have it in stock they can order it for you.

Wow Mike out of all the people that are on this forum you know who I am. You’re the man!!!!! For some reason I thought we just used ultimate compound at the class ( I could be wrong). I used 105 do and a red cutting pad to do the hood of the truck because it was so beat up, I then moved to ultimate compound with a yellow pad to do the hood and the sides of the truck. That’s stuff (ultimate compound) is a piece of cake to remove. Ultimate compound has become my new cheating weapon of choice. It goes on easy, it wipes off even easier and once it’s off it looks like you repainted the car!!!!!!! Ill start a new thread regarding 105 but honestly I was only applying in small areas on the hood and going over it 5 times (left right then up and down) with a final light pass as a finish and plus I never let it dry. It was winding as heck yesterday and even though I was in the garage I had the garage door open and I was still getting lots of wind.fficeffice" />

                Whoops!

My mistake, we were using UC and not M105, sorry for the confusion, it's been day of fast typing and sometimes I type faster than I think...

If the M105 is the new version for use with a DA then maybe try the KB method of dampening the pad with the 105 first, then try applying your X pattern or circle pattern of product onto the face of the pad and then try buffing.

If that doesn't work you could always try this,

                Using a wetting-agent with M105 and M205

And if you still have problems, bring your M105 and if you can the car this is happening too to the next TNOG class and let us see if we can either duplicate the problem or make it work the right way.

My regular pads were soaking today and a friend wanted some work done on his badly scratched hood of his PT Cruiser. I figured OK, just bring some other pads that weren't used earlier and some of my new 105 and give her a go. Used the 105 on my vehicle today using Edge pads and some CCS pads as well, no problem at all. Some dusting, expected but no issues with removal. Well I start doing the PT with a yellow 8 inch Megs foam pad and holy **** the product is drying after 2 passes and its just caked itself onto the paint. Didn't have any 50/50 IPA to spritz so it took some serious effort to remove these huge stuck on swirls of product. Tried again with more product on the pad and tried to not let it dry but same issues cropped up. Then I remember that I had used the pad for a short time a few weeks ago. I can't recall what product it was but it certainly didn't mix well with 105. I had to finish with a green wool pad for now until my other ones are available or until I get a BP to match the purple foam pad that came with the compound. Lesson learned, clean pads or only use one product on a particular pad. I mean the pad looked clean, wasn't caked with product or anything but the results were disastrous to say the least. I hope people don't jump to the conclusion that the 105 is the problem it could be another factor.
