  • How much pressure ?

How much pressure do you all regularly use when polishing?

I am a new user of power tools, just got a Flex, and I'm in the process of figuring out the best techniques.

I used M105/205 combo last weekend and was very happy with the results.

However, I still have a few swirls that I found I can remove with a white Lake Country 6.5" pad and M205. To get good results I was leaning into the machine pretty good, probably 20-25 lbs of pressure.

    Does that sound reasonable ?

I know someone had posted a really good thread about pressure using picture and a scale as well. Anyone mind finding it, i've looked and looked.

give it time, Mike will chime in with all the good details. They recommend about 10-15lbs of pressure when using the more aggressive polishes.

Polishing should only require the weight of the machine itself.

          Re: How much pressure ?

If I remember correctly, Mike Phillips suggests between 15-20 lbs of pressure if compounding, and between 10-15 lbs if polishing, and almost no pressure if merely applying wax.

Thank you! I was driving myself crazy looking for that link! Here's another that's a great supplement to the thread you linked: Tips & Techniques for using the G110, G100, G220 and the PC Dual Action Polisher

                Re: How much pressure ?

The use of a scale to determine the correct amount of pressure was very helpful to me. If you use the scale you get a good idea of how little pressure you have to apply to get the maximum results.

I find the pressure needed depends on what pad, polish, compound and condition of paint you are working on. In every case the pressure applied should not stop the rotation of the pad.
