  • car appraised soon

I hope I put this in the right forum. My wife and I have decided that we are going to have our 1964 Bel Air appraised within the next few months for insurance purposes. Is there anyone who has done this, and what areas, of the car, do we need to concentrate on, if any?

Although I cannot give you specifics as to your particular vehicle these are some good tips in general:

    1. Do the best possible job cleaning up the little things. It is this attention to detail that will be noticed at appraisal time.
    2. Try to maintain original parts and replace with factory original whenever possible to maintain value.
    3. Improve/maintain the paint condition. It's the first thing that catches anyone's eye and a swirl-free, glossy finish makes a huge difference.
    4. Same goes for the interior. Have it professionally detailed to improve seating surfaces, carpeting, and interior vinyl.
    5. Now is the time to address any glaring mechanical or paint defects. Have chips/scratches removed or repaired. Make sure the engine is in the best running condition possible. A tune up if required. Oil change. etc.
    6. Tires are a biggie too so if you have bald or worn tires now is also the time to address this.

If your goal is for a resale, the above items will bring much more than their cost in a substantial return-on-investment. Classic car buyers are sticklers for original parts, matching numbers, and pristine condition. If you're keeping the car and this appraisal is just for insurance purposes then you might not have to go into such an exhaustive routine but rather get it looking as good as possible so you get a fair "appraisal worth" and will be compensated correctly should anything ever happen to the car.
