  • What gauge extension cord for the G110?

I read the extension cord gauge recommendations for use with the G110 DA in the supplied manual, but those recommendations are minimum gauges. Currently I use a 50 foot cord connected to a 25 foot cord (both at 16 gauge - which keeps within the Meguiars recommended minimum), but the 25 ft cord gets a little hot with extended use. I'm thinking of upgrading to a single 100 ft cord, maybe keeping it at the minimum recommended 16 gauge, but certainly open to going to a 12 gauge if it would be better for the life of the G110.

For you detailing pros, what gauge do you recommend for a single 100 ft extension cord?

    Why would you need 100'?
get the shortes possible, the less distance the electricity has to travle the less heat it will produce.
You can get a heavy duty one but you shouldn't need it

Wow - you must be working a long way from an outlet.

As Maserati suggested, try to use the shortest possible (kinda like the Meguiar's motto, eh?) but in your case you might not have an option.

That being the case, a quick check on wikipedia provided the following information:
      - a 16 guage cord is only rated for 10 A @ 100'
      - a 14 guage cord is rated for 13 A @ 100'
      - 12 and 10 guage are rated for 15A @ 100'
Depending on the price difference, I would personally opt for 10 ga if it's not too much of a premium. That way you're covered if you ever decide to push the envelope.

No garage, no driveway, no outdoor outlets. I have to run the cord from a house outlet 10 feet from the front door, across the lawn, to the curb. I need a bare minimum of 60 feet just to maneuver around the car, but only 60 feet means dragging the cord over the finish to get to the drivers side. 75 feet gives me a comfortable length to work with. I figured if I'm buying a new cord, I might as well account for future situations where I may need that extra length.

I feel like I'm reading a "Family Circus" cartoon!
If you have to do that, I think a 16 gauge should work with no problems. I've worked with allot of extension cords and never had a failure.

If only it were as easy as a Family Circus cartoon although it's probably best that it isn't, because I'd have to buff out all those lined dashes tracing my path of travel!

But that inconvenience has led to some innovative solutions, such as the cordless leaf blower I scored off Craigslist this past weekend.

No more power cord scuff marks from trying to blow-dry my car with my corded shop vac

I understand what Mario is saying, but I would err on the side of caution and get the larger gauge extension cord. I would get the 12 gauge but at that distance you should play it safe and go for the 10 gauge. I understand that you are only using the g110, but for future tool use like hot water extractors, circular saws, chop saws, etc etc get the 10 gauge. I know on my durrmaid extractor it has a 15 foot 10gauge cord they recommend no less than a 12gauge cord but prefer you use a 10 gauge cord. just my 2 cents.

I have a 12 gauge 15 amp cord and it's more than enough.
