  • what to use on metal dash

I have a '64 BelAir with a metal dash. the color is the same as the out side of the car. What kind of products would you recommend to bring the color back to life?

    Is it painted metal?
Then use Ultimate Compound or SwirlX or ScratchX
It bare metal I would use a metal polish depends on what type of metal it is.

It is painted metal, do not know any more than that. It was suggested that I try waxing it, this did not work. As a mater of fact, I've had a heck of a time getting the wax to come off. I can use the clay bar on it and take the wax off, right? OR is there a better way.

By the way, I have been a member for about 2 weeks and I have learned more about how to take care of my cars' paint than I have ever know before. Wow, What a learning curve!

Have never worked with a painted metal dash.
But I figure that you should treat it like the paint outside.

Re: what to use on metal dash

Classic cars and trucks do have painted metal dashes and in most cases the pant should be smooth like the outside of the car.

First, anytime you work on something you haven't worked on before do a Test Spot, in this case you would have applied just a little wax to a small area of the dash to see what happens.

You say the wax isn't coming off easy? Is the paint smooth or rough?

If it's smooth the wax should wipe off easy, if it's rough then the wax is getting trapped in the irregular surface of the paint and removal is going to be hard.

If the surface is not smooth, then clay won't work because you should only use clay on a smooth surface. If you use clay on any kind of rough or textured surface the clay will get stuck into the irregular surface imperfections.

Again, test in a small area before rubbing over the entire dash.

Can you share the condition of the paint on the dash? Does it look GREAT like it did when the car was new or has it gone down hill since 1964 to the point where it's no longer smooth, clear and glossy?

Is it possible you can take a couple pictures and then upload them into your gallery?

Digital cameras are GREAT! But if you don't know how to get your pictures off your computer and into your messages nobody's going to ever get to see your really cool pictures.

If not, take the pictures and e-mail them to me and I'll upload them into your gallery.

Without seeing or getting a better description of the condition of the paint it's really hard to prescribe a remedy. It could be that it's too far gone to salvage.

If it has a rough surface then you would want to try to smooth it over using a paint cleaner like suggested above but the problem is usually the paint on dashes is thin to start with, add 45 years of old age and it isn't getting any thicker or in better, workable condition.

Mike, pictures are in my gallery. The dash feels somewhat smooth, but has more a powder coat feel to it.

            Thanks for your help!

It's been a while since I've been around a 1964 original Impala but from memory, after looking at the pictures, I don't think that was a high gloss finish to start with, so polishing it isn't going to make is smooth and glossy.

Might want to join a classic Impala forum or classic Chevy forum and check with their in-house gurus on the type of factory paint originally used on the dashes back then and see if what I posted is accurate.

I typed, Classic Impala Forum into www.google.com and the first one I found was this one,

                    Impalas.net

I found out that 1964 Bel Aires have a flat based paint. By the way the web site that Mike gave me about Impalas was very helpful. What would be the best aproach to taking care of the dash?

There's not a lot you can do because nobody makes a product for flat paints.

Might try just wiping with Ultimate Quik Detailer and call it good...

                        G13616 Quik Interior Detailer

On flat paints I've personally had good luck with Gold Class Trim Detailer, but understand this is not meant for paint nor recommended for paint.

Here's a couple of threads to check out,

While this thread is on vinyl graphics and stickers, it has the same effect on flat paints...

                        How To Maintain Vinyl Graphics/Stickers/Stripes/Decals

The below link goes to a recent Thursday Night class where the owner of a Volvo had a flat finish on a section of the hood and we used Trim Detailer on it and it worked pretty well.

                        G10810 Gold Class Trim Detailer

Just note that because the color is beige or light tan to start with nothing is going to make a dramatic before and after appearance result, so as way of staying safe and keeping it simply, maybe just wipe it down with Quik Interior Detailer, use a wash rag or microfiber or whatever will drag across the flat/matte surface without any problems and give the dash a good wipe down and cal it good.
