  • ultimate quick detailer question

okay, is the ultimate quick detailer really safe on a car with dust? in the videos they say it's okay to spray it and wipe off the dust with it. question is, doesn't that technically rubs in the paint and you are potentially going to scratching your paint?

    Re: ultimate quick detailer question

The answer is: it depends. It depends on how much dust/dirt/contamination there is, and it also depends on how hard or soft your paint is.

Some paints can be scratched with a little pressure from the soft portion of your finger tip! Others are much harder and you can get away with more contact without inducing scratching or marring.

As for the level of dust, you really need to make a personal judgment call. If it is truly just a light layer of actual dust (not dirt or mud), then a gentle wiping action with a quality microfiber towel (Like the Supreme Shine) should be safe.

Try a test spot, evaluate, and determine if it is safe to continue.

if there is a lot of dust you may have to use a lot of towels. You may only get to wipe a few inches before that porton of the towel gets loaded up with dust and dirt and have to switch to a new section of towel or a new towel completely. Dont try to wipe down the whole car with just a couple of mf towels.

If the car is really dusty I would just wash it.
Why risk the possibility of instilling scratches and/or swirls.

sounds like i should just wash my car. the thing is i have to park outside, i have no garage where i live. i want my baby looking good. i watched meguiars video on how to detail the car and they state that it's okay to just spray the ultimate quick detailer and wipe off with a mf towel. the thing was they didn't really state the condition of the car, as in light dust or really dusty. so i was a bit confused. i don't want to wash my car every weekend..

If there is light dust on your car, use a Quik Detailer.
              Anything heavier wash it.
You should probably clay your paint too.
And add a nice coat or two of NXT 2.0 Tech Wax

If you want to keep it dust free and are willing to spend the 10 or so minutes a day to do so, my suggestion would be to first make a pass with Last Touch undiluted. LAst Touch has a very high lubricity level and is likely your safest bet for removing a day's worth of dust.

Then get a second fresh towel, and make one quick pass with the UQD. This adds a definite CLEAN, fresh look to the car and should be safe on most paint systems. I do it on my own car, and if I get swirls from it they are very minor and take a fair amount of time to develop.

regarding the clay part - am i suppose to clay bar my car EVERY time i want to wax it? if so, that means it's once every 3 months or so.

i've read on other forums that we should only clay bar the car once or twice a year. i live in CA but i'm not sure what kind of contaminants we most frequently get.

There is no set time. A couple to a few times a year would be great. A good way to test if your car needs to be clayed is place your fingers inside a plastic bag like a zip-loc bag and run your fingers over the paint while it is wet (after it was washed). If you feel bumps, it could benefit from a clay bar.

I like to use Last touch this time of the year. Due to the pollen. To me the pollen is more then light dust. Being that the last touch seems to have more lubricity it cleans up the pollen easier in my eyes. Then after that step, it is a quik qd with the #135.

Where in California do you live? Are you close enough to come to a Thursday night "Open Garage" at Megs in Irvine? You can get some good "hands on" answers to your UQD question.

what happens when you put a coat of wax without clay baring?
