  • Duster or No Duster? Mike help!!

I'm new to black cars, I usually buy silver. I love it, however the dust drives my wife NUTS!!

So, I've heard and read some comments on the California Duster. I'd like to know how many people use a duster out there, and if so, what is the proper technique to do it so it does not scratch?

Also, I'd like to see Mike's opinion (both Megs opinion and his own) about using dusters. (And proper technique) It seems like every time we wash it, the very next morning its covered with a layer of dust!

    HELP!!

    Thanks!

I use mine everynight or morning. I never use it unless it's only been a day since I last used it. Don't use any pressure really, just glide it over the panel then shake it out, and continue around the car.

Use common sense, if you went down a dirt road and your black car is now beige, don't use it. If you drove to work and it sat there all day then drove home, it's probably fine to use it.

Don't try to remove bird droppings or stuff like that, just glide it over the entire car.

It's really a personal preference type of tool. As long as you keep your car's paint in good condition with a good coat of wax or paint sealant, and you keep your duster in clean condition then it won't do any harm.

I bought one to use on our black Honda Pilot and found when I used it that it did remove some dust but it also left little piles at the end of a stroke that the black paint highlighted easily to my eyes. It's likely it does this on light color cars too but you're eyes won't see it as easily.

So for me and our black Pilot I did not prefer it over using a microfiber with a quick detailer.

So personal preference and that means you need to get one and try it out yourself.

I often wondered about the california duster. Many different things I read about it were in general not positive. Most common complaint was scratching. But, as Mike wrote, I think it depends on how you maintain the duster and as Ryan L wrote, when to use it and when not to.

I personally would like to try one. Didn't Meguiar's make one at one time?

Here in NY, spring is near and so is the relentless pollen. In the condo complex where I live, we have a lot of long needle white pine trees which equates to even more relentless pollen. In my case, I'd be out there morning, noon and night for as long as the car was clean.

If you want to save some money, Big Lots is selling Turtlewax's Car Duster for $7. I think Turtlewax discontinued them.

            Which is better?

            or

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

            I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
            Remove swirls my friends.

              Either seems fine.

I have been using my duster for about 4 years now. Can't say I have put scratches in the finish. If I had it would have been thrown out long time ago. lol.

I have a California Car Duster and a Meguiar's Gold Class Body Duster.

They both work great and I have never had any problems with scratches.

I only use them if the car has one day's worth of dust. That means that after I wash the car, I use it every evening (until it either rains or I miss one day).

I use the quick detailer and a microfiber towel to deal with the bird ****.
