Stupid G110 Question?

I already did a search to see if someone had already posted the question but why does the G110 call for use of a "5 Inch Pad Only?"
Is this a recomendation or a requirement?
I know im not the only one to wonder?

Where it reads 5" pad, technically it should read 5" backing plate.

Regardless of what the clutch assembly says, I just spoke with Jason Rose about this and he assured me that when this tool was designed all factors such as backing plate, foam pad and chemicals used with our pads and this means the design included working with both dry and wet pads.

Also keep in mind that when the Porter Cable unit was designed as a wood sander, it was designed with the idea of affixing a thin, light weight piece of sandpaper to the face of the backing plate, not a thick foam buffing pad. It just so happens to work really well for both and that's one of the reasons Meguiar's first introduced the Porter Cable unit to the car detailing world back in the early 1990's way before all these other online sites even knew about machine cleaning and polishing paint.

I have had very good success with my G110 but it has mostly been with smaller LC foam pads 5.5" and 4" that seem to spin much faster. Unless im 4-5 or more dial setting 6.5" pads do not seem to spin very well with any pressure applied.
With M105 6.5" pads seem to bind even more and the overlap area of 1.5" on the pad seems to not work efficiently...ie quickly drying out and making dust.

The backing plate that came with my G110 actually measures 4¾".
Meg's 2.0 soft buff yellow pad actually measures 6¼".

I understand why the pad should be larger than the backing plate but IMHO it seems there is too much pad beyond the backing plate unsupported. Why is the smallest pad Meguiars makes so much larger than the preferred backing plate? Will Meg's ever make smaller foam pads.
