but i'm just curious, when i read in a forum, someone's post they remove the wax when washing the car and then claying the car, doesn't that to much waste of a time

Well if they remove wax (whatever their method may be such as IPA) it removes the wax, but not any surface contaminants, so that is why they clay bar.

You are correct, removing wax really is not necessary. When you clay bar, it removes the wax and surface contaminants. The key to a great finish is proper prep work, which would entail clay barring. So in a way if you want to have your best shine, you will remove wax as a byproduct of cleaning surface contaminants off your car with a clay bar.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
      Remove swirls my friends.

Mike Phillips wrote about dish detergents somewhere on MOL, but I cannot find the post or the thread. Basically, Dawn is a very high alkaline detergent. You run the risk of drying out rubber trim and seals if you use it. It's also not good for the paint either, as it could dry out the paint over time. This is the sum of it.

Do a search on MOL and type in "dish detergent" and you will find a host of information about the use of dish soap.

Claying a vehicle is safer and ample.
First time I have heard that. I did a search, but didn't find the article either.

I would recommend claying and then using a paint cleaner prior to apply any protective products like wax. Clean paint is a must for best appearance and maximum durability.

            Here you go:

People on other forums recommend using Dawn Detergent Dish Washing Soap to wash my car? (http://archive.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1895) Hi all. I was wondering... everyone suggests the use of Dawn dish soap for removing wax etc... why Dawn specifically? why not Sunlight or Palmolive etc? any reason? Thanks,

              Thanks for the link.

I'd like to do some research with the paint manufacturers for their recommendation. I'm goint to ask my Sikkens and Glasurit reps what they have to say

Rubber is another concern that cant be questioned. Drying it out will just kill it over time. But is Dawn worse than sunlight?

I know alkaline inst preferred, ph neutral is the goal for everyday washes.

Jdoria, you will use what you think is best. The opinions vary and go either way. As a general rule of thumb for me, if there is ANY doubt a process or product could cause harm, I will avoid it.
