  • I think I'm FINALLY getting it.. (polishing)

So up to now I've generally found myself frustrated by the fact that no matter what I do, I could never get rid of swirls for the most part.

I've tried the PC, now the G110 and even thought about the flex.

I've done #83, mothers power polish and of course all kinds of wax, now I feel like this morning I rounded a corner..

Instead of seeing how quickly I could get my truck done (2006 Dodge Dakota Offroad, flame red), using Ultimate Compound and a yellow megs pad, G110 on 5, I FORCED myself to slow down.

1-2" per second, left right on a panel, then up and down checkerboard, then at angles. For instance a door took me about maybe 10 minutes. I kept having to get after myself to SLOW DOWN.

The hood took maybe 30 minutes, maybe a bit more, the whole truck took about 3 hrs , I did not do below the door molding. Do you guys do the rocker panel part when doing swirl removal? I did swirlX on the roof the other day and it looks pretty good.

I then fired up the twin 500watt halogen work lamp stand and held it over the hood, swirls 95% gone I'd say. Doors, 95%+ gone. What is left are some very small straight-line RIDS. I plan on going over them at a later time, as I have two more cars to get cleaned up while the weather has a break from raining every other day Even the sore thumb fine scratch down the back of the tailgate is BARELY perceptible and only if you know where it is.

I think forcing myself to SLOW DOWN (probably told myself 30-40 times while doing the truck) and the UC/SWX helped me achieve something I've not gotten to in about 4 years of being a novice with a buffer.

No pics yet, I have to put on a LSP tonight, but just feeling kinda good about how it looks , and that maybe I might be able to start getting some reliable results that are pleasing to me.

Just wanted to babble, thanks for reading.

I would definitely say you were rushing it. 3 hours to polish an entire truck is insanely fast even still!

For me, to include wash, dry, clay, a single pass of polish, wax, windows, and quickie on the interior will take me 8-9 hours EASILY.

If you rush with a polish or compound you do not give it time to actually abrade the paint- unlike a wax which essentially just needs to be evenly spread over the surface, abrasive polishes and compounds need to be worked into and on the paint to smooth out the rough edges of the paint itself.

Glad to see you are starting to get it figured out

      Glad to hear that

A full detailing section for me takes anywhere from 10-12 Hours

Patience is the key. You have to take your time.

May I suggest M105/M205 by your G110 in the future using Soft Buff 2.0 Polishing Pads.

        Yay!
Going to fast is one of the major problems with using a machine.
Also going to slow is a problem
Glad you found the zen in detailing!
        Here, this will help

When I say 3 hours, that is just the UC application.. nothing done yet to the interior, and was washed, clayed the day before then QD this morning. 3 hrs consisted of everything except the rocker panels and roof (I decided to only do swirlX on it). Oh I know, the claying took about 2hrs, the interior will probably take 2hrs or so as well.

I was a bit leary of the 105/205 combo as it seems pretty rough, much moreso than the UC I understand. I know the 205 is closer to the swirlX if not a little less aggressive?

Heck, when I first tried #83, I did my whole Jeep Cherokee in about an hour. That being said, it did look better than when I started, but had no idea the potential was there.

Even if I did still go a bit fast here, I've never had this good of a result from polishing before. I'll do my best to slow down a little more on the next car (1997 Nissan Maxima, light gold color).

1 hour is just WAYYY too fast. There is absolutely no way you are giving the polish enough time to do its job. Especially with a diminishing abrasive, it needs more time. I think you will be even happier with more time.

That 1hr was the first time I ever used the polisher and had no idea what I was doing.. Looking back I know I wasn't doing that one right at all. That was 4 years ago or so.

With anything there is a learning curve. Glad you stuck with it and figured out your problem.

Now if I can just slow down a little more and keep learning, I'll have it made, eh?
