  • Powder-Coated Wheel Care?

    Hey guys,

I know you should treat painted wheels like you would your car finish, but is powder-coated the same?

    Finish on my Konigs:

    "Finish: Hyper Gray
Gray powder coat with a very thick high gloss shine appearance."

I tried to be very careful washing my new wheels the other day and noticed after I have induced some scratches. Could I be able to rub these out with cleaners like swirl-x/#80/#83 and so on? Or is it a lost cause?

    Appreciate it!

Hey, Yes you can use a light paint cleaner to remove the swirls/scratches: Such as the ones you listed.

As for cleaning them, use a soft brush and some Multi Peace Wheel Cleaner

Yeah I have Meg's All Wheel Cleaner (I think will be fine, says for all wheel types) for when I wash, but need to find the quick wheel detailer some day! Can you show me what brushes you talk about to help wash? A sponge was not very easy at all with the spokes...

Looks like the all wheel cleaner is a no-go on powder coated wheels (finally saw it in fine print on the back )

Hopefully the one time I used it won't cause any issues!

I can't find that cleaner you posted above on the meguiars site or ADS.com... The multi-piece cleaner. Is it even made anymore?

I think I saw the aluminum wheel cleaner can do powder-coated wheels... Should I just use that?

I picked up the aluminum wheel cleaner (it says it safe on powder coated wheels) and will have to return my all wheel cleaner.

Anybody know where to find quick wheel detailer by chance?

Another question, what products can I use to remove fine scratching and stuff? I contacted the wheel company and they told me:

"They are clearcoated so any polishing would damage the clearcoat."

But it doesn't make sense unless its a weak clearcoat? Can any of you shed some light on this for me? They are powdercoated with a clearcoat I guess and just want to know if I could use/try products like #80 and #83 without ruining the finish. I know I can do a test spot, but I would rather have some idea before.

Multi-Piece became Aluminum Wheel Wash, great product, just didn't sell well with the Multi-Piece name. See this thread,

As for polishing powder coated wheels,

All the powder coated components I've ever tried to polish on to remove defects hasn't really worked, at least for me and the things I've worked on.

Powder coating technology, like everything else, is always changing and some of our forum members have had good luck polishing it. So get a foam applicator pad and try testing out some paint cleaners like ScratchX or SwirlX or UC to a small area and then check to see if it's helping or hurting. Stop if it's hurting.

Might even try a simple cleaner wax to see if it clears up the coating enough to be acceptable.

Powder coatings are not like normal paints at least when it comes to polishing.

YeahI will have to just try it, but I guess I was confused about them being clear-coated, so I thought maybe it would be able to be corrected via paint methods.
