(Chips + Scratches) Touch up paint = Wet Sanding

So here are some pics of my touch up painting and wet sanding
I first cleaned out the chips-n-scratches with Lacquer Thinner, filled them in with paint and let them dry for a few days.
Wet sanded with Meg's
Unigrit Finishing Papers - (Grits: 1000, 2000, and 3000)
Then finished it off with a Double Sided Wool Cutting Pad and #105 - Ultra Cut Compound

Here's the key mark. I already did one pass last year






After the filling of the scratch with paint







After #1000




After #1000, #2000, #3000 & M100



Then another pass with M105, DONE!


So I did go through the Clear Coat, so you have to be careful! But now I get to learn Airbrushing!


Now on to the hood I did last year






After #1000






I can't even pick out the spot!

You too can do this!
It's really not that hard.
What you see me doing is basically just sanding and buffing but, with the right products, a little skill and knowledge.
You'll never learn if you don't try, so go for it!

Did you strike thru the clear while sanding or buffing?

Sanding.
I don't have a depth gage so, it's hard to know how much your removing.
You can barely see it in person.

I would suggest taping the surrounding areas off so you sand tape, rather than clear coat in the future.

Also, be very careful with that 1,000 grit paper- it's aggressive stuff! I even burned through clear with 3,000 only and a relatively low amount of sanding.

Well I sanded the whole quarter panel so no taping was needed.
I figured if I had the mess going to do the whole section. The whole piece came out very nice.
Deep rich color, smooth as silk, and now more orange peel!

Also, be very careful with that 1,000 grit paper- it's aggressive stuff! I even burned through clear with 3,000 only and a relatively low amount of sanding.

I only used the #1000 on the passes to get the touch up paint down to the surrounding surface, only a few passes. #2000 was used for a couple of more and then #3000 to finish it off.
So it was #3000 that did it. I was watching closely, that's why the spot is very small.

Very nice work! Is laquer thinner the preferred solvent in a case like this? Just wondering, the results speak for themselves.

Well I use lacquer to clean off any greasy, waxy, or oily stuff. It works great. It will cut into the paint and ruff it all up to accept and bond with the new paint. Mind you I'm not a painter.
