So, yesterday I was working on a family member black Audi A8. Beautiful car in horrible condition.
I'm going to be doing a FULL correction in the coming weeks and just worked on the driver side front quarter panel to show my brother-in-law how the car would look. It brought up some thoughts and questions I'd like to share.
1. The M105/M205 combination is sick. So disgustingly good at removing swirls and making the finish pop, I was amazed.
2. I think it was Porscheguy who or Mark who said they find M105 with a DA (G110) leaves the finish nearly LSP ready. I have to say, I think whoever said it is spot on. It may not be 100% show car ready after M105, but its not far either.
3. I like M205 better than M80. Don't get me wrong, M80 and I have been hot for a long time, but M205 was just a much younger model with better legs!
Issues:
4. This car is swirled so badly that when I removed the swirls I started to see plenty of RIDS which I did not notice while the swirls were present. I used M105 over the quarter panel with an LC 4" CCS foam pad (orange) at speed setting 5 (three passes over quarter panel). I actually did half the quarter panel at a time (3 passes each half). All swirls gone after two passes, but the RIDS remained. I cannot feel them (ie: they have no depth), but I cannot remove them. Should I quit (when I do the full detail) or should I keep hammering with M105 and my G110?
5. After the M105 I did one finishing pass with M205. Again, the finish was amazing EXCEPT for the RIDS. I didn't do a second pass with M205 because the paint looked good and I figured M205 wasn't going to remove the RIDS, so I stopped after one.
6. In finished with M07 and NXT 2.0. Once completed, you could no longer see the RIDS, probably on account of the oils in M07 and NXT 2.0's ability to conceal mild defects. I was very pleased by this because it gave me a perfect looking finish (and probably to the untrained eye) it would have looked pretty perfect even with the RIDS, but the question is, since my M07 + NXT2 combo made it *look* perfect, is it worth hammering away at those pesky RIDS?
7. I am going to do my best to do before and after shots of this car when I do the full detail. If I can get this entire car looking like the quarter panel, it will be my best work yet. My brother-in-law told me I should get out of the law business and into the detailing business (the highest compliment I've ever received doing a car).
Stay tuned!
