  • Cleaning tires - I've read all the posts

    All,

I've read all the threads on this topic related to brown tires, blooming, cleaners, dressings, etc. I understand the concept of blooming, but have a set of tires that doesn't seem to clean up the way I'd expect after reading all of the suggestions on this board. They're white-letter tires so although tire dressing will usually dissolve any residual brown hue on the tires, the dressings seem to deposit the residual brown dirt right back on the white letters.

I've tried all kinds of cleaners/degreasers (including the Meguiars products) and a variety of soft and stiff bristled brushes. I can get about 85% of the brown off (as evidenced by what rinses off the tires), but it's that last 15% I wish I could get. I've stopped short of using a product like Bleche-White (as also recommended highly by some here) because of fear of damaging my wheels. Please see the attached pictures.

Any suggestions? Just looking for a 100% clean tire before dressing. Thanks.

What strength did you use the products on your wheels at, like the APC?

Are the pics of "clean" tires? Just wondering what that stripe is from.

I still recommend Wesley's Over anything.

Don't get scared by the warnings, it is no different than any other cleaner.

Unless you actually spray directly on the wheels, you will have no problems.

It is nice to see the grime and grease just melt off as you spray it on.

It will also clean the white letters up too.

As a dressing after word, use Gold Class Endurance High Gloss Gel

            I usually use a 1:4 ratio of cleaner/degreaser.

Yep, that's a clean tire, scrubbed three times with degreaser and a stiff bristled brush (I stop when the dirt stops dissolving).

How do you avoid the wheel? It's got to run right down...

1:4 is there more water or more of the cleaner?
                Or do you mean 4:1

spray the wheel with water before you spray the chemical on the tire and anything that gets on the wheel will at least be diluted by the water. Or spray it on a rag and rub it in

Done. The letters come clean and bright with the wire brush, the sidewalls are the problem.

Ahh, yes. I thought they looked clean, I must have read it wrong. Does it still look that way after dressing is applied? Call the manufacture with your question and convince them you have a bum set of tires and demand a new set!
