  • What metal polish do you prefer?

I have not used a metal polish much in my brief hobbyist detailing time, but was curious what most of the more experienced people on this forum like to use. If you check other, please indicate in a post what you use.

Prior to becoming an active lurker on this forum, I had been using Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish. Am not sure I ever used it correctly, but was not overly impressed with the results.

Re: What metal polish do you prefer?

I use Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish and Hot Rims Chrome Polish. Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish is some of the best all around polish I've used on polished aluminum wheels.

That is a tough poll to answer as you have metal polishes that are for chrome while others are for aluminum etc...

It comes down to what you are working on??

You make a good point. I was just trying to get a feel for what polish, when working with metal of any type, do you feel really works better than others.

                NXT.

It seems to have a corrosion inhibitor in it. A supercharger that I polished over a year ago is still like it was just done.

I voted for Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish, since that and Mother's Chrome Polish are the only metal polishes I've ever used.

i used to use the mothers mag and aluminum polish..i thought it was the best stuff of on earth..i still have 3 tins of it...until i tried the meguiars mag and aluminum polish..i was blown away...with the mothers you really have to scrub good, not with the hot rims polish, its unbelievable..and the scent is nice so theres no more strong metal polish scents..and it fights through all dirt, oxidation, pretty much anything, in seconds without hard scrubbing..i went out and picked up 5 cans of it i love it so much

Re: What metal polish do you prefer?

Metal polishes are not always apples-to-apples comparisons. Someone above pointed out the difference between chrome vs. aluminum polishes. I would extend that to say that even those of the same type are not the same. Analagous to the situation with the various types of paint polishes - some are more aggressive than others.

My comparison is between Mothers mag and aluminum polish and Black Magic Titanium aluminum wheel cleaner. In using both, I can say that the Mothers polish has more cut/bite for the metal than the Black Magic product. The Mothers was effective at removing microscratching in a stainless steel exhaust from wetsanding (1500 - 2000 grit) as part of a polishing effort. The Black Magic product did nothing for the scratching, just put an oily coating on the metal.

Re: What metal polish do you prefer?

I agree with you mooch about the mothers being pretty good polish for aluminum and stainless steel.

I have been able to put a mirror shine on old aluminum wheels and stainless steel after aciding them down and then buffing out with the mothers.

But then I bought some nxt all metal polysh and started doing some of my on test and all I can say is that I've still got a couple untouched cans of the mothers setting on my shelf.

The nxt all metal polysh was much better then the mothers, which I thought there wouldn't be that much difference, but Boy I was wrong!

So without writing a longer thread then I already have my vote was for the nxt, some pretty amazing polish.

FYI: NXT All Metal Polysh is no longer being produced. You can get a very similar version with the M93 metal polish in the marine line.

I actually use Eagle One Nevr-Dull for most metals. The wadding polish is so quick and easy to use and I get unbelievable shine out of interior chrome. Unfortunately it only works so well on weathered metal so I usually reach for NXT all metal polysh when working on heavily oxidized metals. M105 followed by NXT for damaged metals.

                            Basically:
                            Shine it up - Nevr-Dull
                            Light oxidations - NXT Polysh
                            Heavy Damage - M105/NXT

Just thought I would post this older pic I did some time back.

Applied 3 applications each by hand of the product that's listed above area. Did use a acid type aluminum cleaner mixed 50/50 with water to remove all oxidation and start with bare aluminum.

Used to do this type of thing alot, been along time hopefully I can get back into it.

Just to note the no.7 listed is not the show car glaze polish, some type of aluminum polish I found.
