  • Strange paint

This afternoon I did a detail on a 2008 Pontiac G8. I do this car every 6 months or so. Currently the car has just over 9,000 miles and has never had any re-paint done. It is black. However, it is strange that when polishing the side mirrors that black paint comes off onto my pad. But the rest of the car is clear. What would be the point in the factory painting the side mirrors with a single stage paint? Just thought I would ask thinking someone on here would know. I just found it rather odd.

    Thanks

Yes, some manufacturers use both clear and single stages on their cars.

For example, I did a Toyota Sequoia a while back that had a clear coat, but the fender flares were single stage.

Some of the newer two-tone Lexus RX 330s do this as well. Pay attention to them in parking lots and you will notice the bumpers looking awful in comparison to the read of the car

        I love the new RX's.

Yeah, some companies are starting to do this.

The Bolt On Parts are painted in other areas and then assembled later on the line.

For some reason they like to use Single on those parts and then the base/clear job on the actual body.

Too bad it's not all single stage
