  • Making black plastic darker

I've got a 2005 Mustang GT. I'd like to find a way to make the exterior black plastic trim darker (mirrors, wiper area, grille, etc).

Many months ago, somebody here suggested using a product called hyper shine. I've never been able to find the stuff and have given up.

I was wondering if there's any other Meguiars products that work just as well?. I'd like to make this plastic look like new again. They're a little faded and I'd like them jet black.

I've been using TurtleWax ICE on the plastic but it's not really helping much.

    Any suggestions?

M40 is what I normally use for exterior trim, but All-Season Dressing is another product to consider given that it is intended to stand up better through rain, washes, etc.

Like Joel mentioned, Gold Class Trim Detailer is very popular, and Hyper Dressing is a pretty amazing product as well. I personally think Hyper Dressing rocks at spraying wheel wells and engine bays. Spray and walk away...

I likey BlackWOW too. I generally use something like Meguiar's M38 or the GC Exterior Trim detailer to touch the BlackWOW up.

This what I did for my faded black trim. My trim was so faded it was almost gray and not even a consistent gray. I thoroughly cleaned, masked off the area (or removed) and repainted them with Krylon Fusion paint for plastic. I used the color satin black. 2 years later still looks brand new.

I don't know if this would work for your particular situation and I am by no means a professional. This is just what worked for me.

            Good Luck

That's a picture of the new Supreme Shine results on the black plastic trim on my golf car. Great look, no oily feel and lasts.....

                  Hey Tyler,
How does the BlackWOW product hold up? I've been looking for something to put on my TransAm, but since I rarely drive it I've been using a couple different Megs products (tire dressing actually). Just picked up some M40 today and will give that a go. Just curious how hard BlackWOW was to apply, how long it lasts, etc.
                  Thanks.

Applies very easy with a foam applicator. I can do a whole mirror with a drop about half the size of a dime and that's even too much. I wash the car, then apply so it has time to sit and soak into the plastic. Next wash the trim is black. As for how long it lasts, I applied one coat to my Neon after I bought it. All of my cars sit outside 24/7. Even in the high heat when I applied it and washing about once a week, it lasted about 2 months or so. Adding a protectant over it after a wash just seems to make it last longer and keep the look longer. On my Mustang which I hardly drive, the one application lasted some time! I did, on the Mustang, clean the trim with M39 before application too. Great product IMO.

All season dressing is what I use for my exterior trim.
If I remember correctly hyper dressing is water based so if it rains all the dressing will be washed away. Ive also heard some great things about BlackWOW but I have never tried it myself.

There is also a product which is basically a dye but I cant think of the products name...

Are you thinking of Leatherique Rubber Black Dye?

It is very cheap, I would save Tire Dressing for tires

First off, thanks to Tyler for the info on BlackWOW.

Secondly, my main concern with any type of dye (mentioned above) is that the surface won't come out even after the dye has dried. Maybe there is some fool proof way to apply it, but I'm a little wary of it. Also, can you reverse the effects of a dye if it looks bad?

Might have to look at BlackWOW, but it seems to only last a couple months...which my Endurance Tire Gel does. Still on the fence about it.
