I used a PFW "pad" though- which wool do you prefer for the job?

          I use the Meguiar's W4000 or a 3M Wool Pads.

Right. I went back and actually read the referenced threads. I ended up with a product called A-MAZ that has the consistency of a very thick paste. It is intended to remove water spots from shower glass. It has very fine abrasives and is different than auto polishes where actually more polish is better. It is just difficult to work on any larger area except by machine.
