  • Chrome Wheels that looked hopeless

Thought I'd show these chrome wheels from a '98 Dodge Ram Pickup. I couldn't believe they turned out so good. The photo doesn't really do justice to just how bad they looked, like they were rusted and hopeless. They had obviously not been cleaned of brake dust in years, but #0000 steel wool and apc did the job followed by some simmichrome polish. took 2 hours for all four, removed them from the vehicle and reinstalled them when finished. M40 on the tires.
Unfortunately the clear coat has sever failure and he's thinking of repainting which is why I didn't show any full vehicle shots. I measured the paint with a magnetic thickness gauge and it's 3.5 mils thinner on the hood where the clear has flaked off compared to the sides of the truck. FYI

The wheel looks great, nice work? Did the steel wool leave any scratches or marring? I bought some steel wool the other day and am a little nervous about using it on wheels.

As long as it is #0000 and your using it on chrome you should be good....

              Thanks everyone!

The owner was as amazed as I was about these wheels and his headlights. (see http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...ad.php?t=29263)

There were no scratches on the chrome wheels from the #0000 steel wool I made sure to keep it lubricated with cleaner and use light pressure making numerous passes over the entire wheel instead of concentrating on one small area at a time. The Simichrome metal polish cleaned up the remaining discolorations and I topped them with polish/wax from AutoGlym.

It was a good day and a happy owner! (now to go out and try my new Gilmour Foam Gun, Carrand fire nozzle, DP Gel Wheel Cleaner, new M83 , M21, my halogens should be here tomorrow along with my Hyper Dressing, and lastly for my backordered M105 and M205 to come from Amazon to test it out next month. looking for canopies too. I'm having a blast! )

Mike, I expected some reactions when I posted the products I used, but would you mind telling me what you would have used? I already have this stuff on hand so I'm using it up, but I'm here to learn the right way to do things, according to Meguiar's of course...recently purchase M105, M205, M21, M7, M83, Hyper Dressing and plan on more. My thinking was after the Simichrome to remove discoration/stains that AutoGlym Radiant Polish / Wax (a cleaner wax?) would remove any Simichrome residue, clean a little more and add wax protection. I really don't have much else for pure protection on chrome or paint except Zaino Z5. My M21 is not here yet, but don't want to waste that on metal. I do have some new Meguiar's Gold paste wax.

The owner stopped by today after a few days since they were done and they still look as shiny and clean.

So...I hope no one will hold back on criticsm (I can take it ) and/or suggestons, product recommendations, etc.

The Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum Polish or the Hot Rims Chrome Polish would be the Meguiars choices for polishes.

There is also a Chrome Wheel Cleaner in a spray. Not sure how that would do compared to APC.

I'd like to have some Hot Rims Alum Polish, for sure, but already have other stuff and need to use it and put some cash to use for pads, lights and the like, you know. Also have some "other brand" alum polish to use up.

I'd certainly like to use all Meguiar's, but just not in my budget right now. Soon, I hope!
