  • Drag Racing?

I'm an avid Drag Racer(my 98 Grand Prix has ran a best of 12.3@108) and up until now I havn't had a car that I race worthy of apperance care, but now that I do, what can be done to prevent the rubber from the slicks from sticking to the car? I've seen painters tape used a bunch any other good tips? I've heard of PAM cooking spray but am leary of putting cooking spray on my car. lol.

Not really sure about the PAM, but have seen the painters tape used. My friend has a Grand National that I detail for him, and it is a real pain to get all the rubber off.

I have seen Pam used for years on semi-tractors and down in Florida to keep the love bugs from sticking. I have used it without harm in the winter on rubber door moulding to keep doors from freezing shut.Just my experience.

I've heard the pam trick, I've also seen people use mud flaps (not a fan), and tape

you're darn right it is, infact the fender lip is caked with rubber on my ugly car from this and don't see how it'll ever come off, i'm just looking for a way to keep this from happening to my nice car now

Pehaps something liek those "Rock Blocker" clear films would be an option. Would be sort ot permanent, but at least the rubber would not be on the paint.

              Re: Drag Racing?

Have you tried keeping the painted areas maintained using UQD? Or UQD in combination with either NXT or M21?

All three of these products contain our hydrophobic polymers. UQD makes the surface really slick... couldn't hurt to try if nothing else, UQD is a great product and if you haven't tried it out yet for just normal wiping down of the paint then it's definitely a product you want to try.

I've heard of people using PAM before also, no first hand experience. That said PAM is a food grade product, it seems to be pretty safe for it's intended purpose. One thing you could do is test it out to a small area?

                Step 1 - Protection:
Wheel Wells - liberally spray PAM in the wheel wells (NASCAR teams often spray this on the front of their race cars for easier clean up during pit stops)
Painted Surfaces - use 3M blue painters tape to mask off the areas

                Step 2 - Clean up:
Wheel Wells - spray Meguiar's All Purpose Cleaner into the wheel wells, agitate with a toilet brush purchased at your local grocery store (long handle, small brush head makes access a snap), rinse with water and then liberally dress with Hyper Dressing or M40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner
Painted Surfaces - remove the painters tape, done (golly gee, that was easy

If you arrive at the drag strip with a very clean and well waxed car, a simple once over with Ultimate Quik Detailer and several Supreme Shine Microfiber towels, along with the above steps, will return your car to that "ready to race" appearance.

The above process always made my buddies rather jealous since their cars never looked as good as mine.

                  Re: Drag Racing?

Great tips! I'm getting my first "real" (meaning totally dedicated to race only and not a stock engine) drag car ready for debut in the next couple of months and have thought about this when I see cars caked with rubber at my local track.

Pam, imagine that! I like it.

Currently tore down in my garage for trans tunnel modification, engine mounts, aluminum dash, etc. Had a 12 point cage put in recently so I can go to Gainesville if I get the urge and it will pass inspection.

Plan to wet sand the paint once it's back together too, so I'm loving this detailing forum's rotary tips as well!

What have you done to your Grand Prix to make it run 12's. I'm pretty sure you have a 3800 series v-6 in it.

                        Just curious.

Hey, thanks! It's been a life long dream to race just for the fun of it that I've put off too long. Got it a few years ago, but had to have back surgery (again). Hope to be on the track in a couple months. I WILL post pics.
