  • new pc user. dried the product on paint. help.

    hi there,
it was my first time using the pc and i messed up some part of the hood.
its a black car with clear coat. and i was using meguiars ultimate compound.
it was a sunny day and the car was already hot.
the product was drying up really fast and i think i overlap'd it too much and
dried the product on the paint.
in direct sunlight, i can see the color difference on the hood.
    it looks brownish haze...
is there anyway i can cure this problem? i tired going over it again with
same compound but it doesnt help. thanks.

    Hi dustleet,

I moved your thread into Detailing 101 (the catch all for detailing questions) as "Hot Topics" is reserved for Moderators to move, or post topics only.

As for your issue, first let me address the cause: working on a hot surface is NOT a good idea. If you do not have anywhere in the shade to park the car while working on it, I would suggest working early in the morning, or as the sun starts to go down.

That said, I am not quite sure what is occurring; are you saying that some of the product dried onto the paint? Or that you think the surface was so hot the product was not functioning properly?

Have you tried washing the hood, and/or going over it with a clay bar and clay lube? Can you feel the discolored area with your fingers?

Dustleet, can you describe for us the technique you used? How large a section did you do at a time? Did you immediately remove the polish before moving on to a new section? Did you allow the polish to dry on the paint surface?

But do not worry. Whatever the problems, the experts here will set you right. You will be able to correct the situation. Just be patient. Solutions will be forthcoming. If you can provide some pictures of your car and the affected areas, that would be helpful.

        Cheers,

          Hi:

If it is dried product that you are seeing; then hot soapy water should remove it.

You can try hot water with a car wash or Dawn. It may take Dawn to get it off, hard to say. Try to work on a cool surface. Really flood the area were the spot is with the soapy solution and give it a chance to dissolve the product. Rinse the area well, do not let the soapy solution dry on the paint.

If you use Dawn it will remove any wax or sealant on the paint.

          Regards,

Re: new pc user. dried the product on paint. help.

As already mentioned, it's really not a good idea to work on any car in the sun when the surface is hot, especially a black car.

First thing to do is to try to find a place in the shade to work on the car, even to to undo any damage done.

Next, we teach a practice on this forum of doing what's called a Test Spot,

            TEST SPOT

            Doing A Test-Spot

Before going over the entire car, see if you can make just one small section look good, that is apply the product you're planning on using over the entire car to just one small section about a foot squared or so. Work it in and then wipe it off, then apply the polish, work it in but not as much as the compound because now you're not trying to remove paint, just spread the product out, then immediately wipe it off, then apply the wax and let it fully dry and then wipe it off.

Now inspect our results. Make sure you can make one small section look GREAT before going over then entire car. If you can't make one small section look GREAT you won't be able to make the entire car look GREAT.

            Make sense?

            It should look like this,

And if you're having any problems, the post back here after the test section and we'll help you tweak your technique to insure you get it right.

Once you get your test spot dialed in you can then repeat it over the entire car and have confidence the entire car will look great!

Ultimate Compound is our most aggressive product in our Consumer Line. While it will finish out really nice on most paints with good technique, in some situation you're going to need to follow it with a less aggressive product to bring the finish up to a higher level.

In these cases you'll want to use SwirlX with it's own, dedicated foam buffing pad, don't use the pad you used with Ultimate Compound.

                  Updates -
first of all, sorry for super delayed response. power supply for computer died, had to format.. etc. etc
secondly, thanks for the attention and responses.

                  situation before:
i did remove the polish immediately but because the surface was hot, it was
drying out the product (ultimate compound) fast already.

ok so, i've tried it 2nd time, washed it using Dawn,
No, i didn't clay the surface - didn't have it at that moment
No, i didn't feel the discolored area with my fingers
but the discolored areas are still there..
i've taken some pictures to give you guys a better idea of what it looks like.

how can i remove these? or can it be removed?
i only did the hood, and after seeing this, i'm scared to use the product as well as pc.

So you can't feel any product at all? I would still try claying the area, and if it doesn't work, then I'm not exactly positive what to do. I'd wait for some of the other guys to chime in.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                    Remove swirls my friends.

Can you rub it off at all? Not sure if it would work, but you might want to dry using a quick detailer on that area.

Re: new pc user. dried the product on paint. help.

Hi Dustleet. I'm experiencing the exact same problem as you, but i used an RB instead of a PC. I had splatter everywhere and the splatter seemed to dry immediately as it landed on the surface of the car. FYI, i am working under the shade, but it is really hot and humid here. Anyway, i tried rubbing them away using a microfiber towel and quik detailer but none were removed. The product will only be removed if i rubbed it a little harder, but since the paint is very soft, scratches were instilled. So i rewashed the car and tried claying. Still, not much of a difference. Maybe the clay that i used wasn't strong enough. I think i should purchase one of the professional detailing clays but i'm not sure whether to get the mild or the aggressive one?
