  • M66 for Hologram Removal?

This past weekend I finished my first detailing job on my own car (thanks to everyone who helped me refine my process). I was very amazed at the swirl removing capabilities of M205, and the nice finish from M26.

Unfortunately, the 205 either did not remove the old holograms that were on the car before or it created new ones. I am using a PC at speed 3 to first work in the polish, and 5 to break it down.

I did some searching and there was a thread about a Black Honda Fit's paint that had problems with holograms as well (I drive a royal blue pearl civic that probably has a similar soft clear coat).

    Link: http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...d.php?p=272436

He was advised to use M66 at the slow setting of 2 on a finishing pad. I wanted to confirm that this is the correct process to remove the holograms and that ColorX was only a temporary fix. Could I possibly try 205 again on a finishing pad at the same speed setting?

    Thanks

You can use a slow speed like 3 to spread a product out over the area you're going to work but once the product is spread out you want to work the product at the 5.0 speed setting as you want and need the higher speed power to help you remove some paint.

If you're not removing paint you're not removing swirls or holograms.

Second, it's a REAL good idea to do just a test spot and dial-in your process 100% for sure before going over the entire car.

You need to make sure you're removing the swirls, not merely masking them and then having them show back up again.

Also, just the act of washing a car can put swirls back into the paint if you're not careful while washing and that includes using good car wash soap, high quality wash mitt and good technique...

Are the swirls you see old swirls showing back up again?
Are the swirls you see new swirls from washing and wiping?

The 2 Speed Setting is so slow it's not going to do anything except to spread a product out over the surface which will act to mask the defects, not remove them.

Maybe try M205 on the 5.0 Speed Setting with a polishing pad to ONLY a TEST SPOT and make sure you're removing swirls in this one spot, if not then try a polishing pad on the 5.0 Speed Setting.

        Thanks for your prompt reply!

I did do a test spot over the car this past weekend with the process you described above. I checked my work with a halogen lamp in my garage, and the swirls were removed. I also could not see the holograms under this lighting, and thought they were gone too. It was not until the sun started to really come out yesterday that I could actually see the holograms.

I am pretty sure that the holograms are from previous washes as I knew they were there before. This was also a major reason why I wanted to take a try at detailing.

Should I just go over the holograms again with M205 using the same process I tried before? Spread out at speed 3, and working in the product at speed 5?

I think I need more practice, and have to go over those hard places twice. I also will not try the speed 2 setting as I want to remove the holograms, and not just hide them.

        Thanks.

Yes, try again to a small section then inspect your results.

If you start with a finishing pad and you're not getting the results you want then switch to a polishing pad as a polishing pad will provide more cleaning power with M205 and test again.

Don't go over the entire car until you dial-in a process that will work 100%

                  Small Update:

I just wanted to post pics of the holograms so they can be evaluated. There definitely are a lot less now after the first pass of M205. I plan to do another this weekend, and hopefully there will be sun to check my work in. These holograms only appear a certain distance from the car, and glaze the car over. The car has a bit of dust over it now from the wind, but I think these shots show them well enough. They only appear from certain angles as well. When the pictures are out of focus, it can show the holograms better and how it glazes over.

These look pretty deep, you need to switch to one of our yellow foam polishing pads instead of a finishing pad with the M205 and/or a switch to both a yellow polishing pad and more aggressive product like our Ultimate Compound or M105

Give the above a try and let us know how that works out...

Good job capturing those scratches in the paint with your camera...
