  • Are my towels still safe to use?

I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered before. I did a search, but was overwhelmed with the results. I have the yellow Meguiar's microfiber towels that I used to wash my old car. They were visibly dirty and I washed them based on suggestions I saw on this site. However, they are still stained and I didn't know if this was a visual thing or if using them on my new car, which is black, would cause harm. I'd be happy to post pictures if needed. Thanks!

    Welcome to Meguiars Online!!
I think they should be okay still.
I have a Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel From Meguiars that I used for Quick Detailing that is dirty like that. I think that since it is clean it should be okay.

Well, you can always post a pic just to be sure.

But some towels will get a little grease stain, etc on them, and they should be fine. Do you feel ant stiffness in the fibers, or just see the color?

A lot of us will use cheaper MF's for dirty spots, like under the hood, or door jambs, etc.

Thanks! I signed up here a while ago, but have never posted. I'll go ahead and give them a try, it's not like the paint is in perfect condition anyway. I just didn't want to make it worse.

The towels still feel soft, they just look dirty. I'll try to snap some pictures when I get home later.

i wouldnt use a heavily stained/soil towel on your paint, but if your talking about a couple little quarter sized stains then i would just be careful

your picture will help give you a better anwser

BURN THEM. BURN THEM ALL TO HECK!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Ooops. Perhaps I got carried away a bit ... Sorry ...

Wash them with detergent at the HOT setting. Ignore the stains. Just pay attention to the paint. If the towels are not damaging the paint, don't worry.

Black cars are heck ... and wonderful.

Re: Are my towels still safe to use?

We have people use our microfiber at Meguiar's Garage for all kinds of things, for example wiping excess tire dressing off tires, this tends to leave black stains on them.

We wash them with a quality detergent which removes the residue but after washing and drying there will still be a faded black stain on portions of the cloths.

We fold them and put them back into use.

If the stain is just a color change that remains after washing and drying then put them back into use, there is no miracle soap or method that will insure 100% of the time that 100% of all staining will be removed.

You're other options are to delegate them to non-paint related duties or dispose of them and purchase new ones.

I think that's how I washed them. It might have helped slightly.

Yeah, this is my first black car. It looks amazing when it's clean!

Hey Mike, you probably don't remember me: I came with an Audi group a while back, we had the guy Clay, who's black A4 had really bad paint. What you describe sounds like the condition of my towels. Again, I'll post some pictures later tonight.

I would use cheap ones from Target and Wal Mart for Non Paint stuff like interior, dabbing up excess tire shine and drying wheels.

Here are the towels. The one in the top right is the worst. My mit also has some small lighter spots like bottom ones. If possible I would like to keep using these, unless they are going to cause damage.

Re: Are my towels still safe to use?

I need to correct what I wrote earlier. If I have a towel that is badly stained, despite pre-soaking and washing with Tide in hot water, then I retire the towel to tire and engine duty. Rightly or wrongly, I don't worry about the mild stains, but if the towel gets too badly stained, then I do cease to use it on the paint surface.

I do not know whether stains inhibit the effectiveness of the towel or present a real danger to the paint surface; but I agree it is better err on the side of safety.

That's our Spam Software kicking in to protect the forum. After you reach a certain number of posts your photos will appear without needing to be moderated.

Just to note, many of the microfibers in our Training Garage are stained like the ones in your pictures. We have so much going on at our facilities all the time between all the different departments besides our classes and this means microfiber polishing cloths get stained.

We wash them using a high quality detergent and dry them and put them back into use. We don't see any performance issue as long as the problem is just a color change not a physical contaminant on the fibers.
