  • Question on if you get a car panel repainted

    Hi everyone

I think someone keyed my car. I have a panel where it looks like they took a key or another object like that and just pushed as hard as they could. It removed a chip of paint, etc.

Anyway, if I get the panel repainted, what are the issues of paint matching? It has the ceramic-particle clear right now. The body shop says they would use PPG paint.

However, could the clear Mercedes use still be different and would then react different to my detailing and everything too? I.e. might need to use different products on that panel as it might be softer?

Do you have any choice where your paint comes from basically, or do you usually just have to go with what body shops have? They order it, or they mix it?

    Thanks.

I think PPG makes the Ceramiclear used by Mercedes-Benz, maybe do some googling and you can turn up the answer. Maybe use some or all of the below search terms...

    Press Release PPG Ceramiclear

If it's a quality body shop and you make sure they know your expectations ahead of time then there shouldn't be a problem, they've really got the color-matching systems down to a fairly exact science.

On a black car, I like your odds. If it was Pearl White on the other hand...

If in doubt, ask your dealer to recommend a shop.... Or, you can also visit the shop, they normally display credentials in the customer service area.

I just had PDR done on my Ford at a shop that was part of a dealer group that sells BMW, Jag, Land Rover, Saturn and Mini. Obviously their specialty was higher end cars and their shop area showed it.

          Here you go...

PPG introduced its OEM CeramiClear® in 2003, initially designed for Mercedes-Benz.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – September 4, 2007 – PPG Automotive Refinish has introduced DC4125 CeramiClear® Mar and Scratch Resistant Clearcoat designed for the Deltron® family of refinish products. This extremely durable clear creates a glass-like, extremely hard surface for superior gloss retention and resistance to car wash and polish scratches.

PPG introduced its OEM CeramiClear® in 2003, initially designed for Mercedes-Benz. PPG’s refinish CeramiClear, D8126 for use with the Global Refinish System, was put on the market the following year and won the Gold award at the International Grands Prix for Technical Innovation in Europe in 2005, an award recognizing expertise and technical excellence in the vehicle equipment sector for the past 20 years.

“Both versions of PPG’s refinish CeramiClear, DC4125 and D8126, perform to the same standards as the OEM finish. Both are unparalleled in scratch, mar and acid-etch resistance and retention of gloss,” said Randy Cremeans, manager, collision segments, North America for PPG Automotive Refinish. “PPG’s technical team in Allison Park, Pennsylvania specifically developed tougher durability tests for our OEM CeramiClear, since no automotive coating had achieved this level of mar resistance before.”

DC4125 is designated for use with PPG’s DBC and DBU Refinish Systems, and is designed for the repair of cars that have a PPG CeramiClear OE finish. A high solids clear, it meets all current VOC limits and is suitable for use in Southern California Districts. DC4125 is formulated for use with DCH4126 CeramiClear Hardener. For more information, contact your local PPG Distributor, or the PPG Customer Focus Center at 440/572-2800, or go to www.ppgrefinish.com.

Thanks. I do trust this body shop, so if I want to go ahead sounds like the PPG clear will be fine.

Mike - one question though, what kind of brush do you recommend if I wanted to try to dab a tiny bit of black mercedes touch-up on the deep part to see if I can live with it?

            Thanks Sir!!

That info on the clear was perfect. Amazing the knowledge here!
