  • When to say when...

For those like me, weekend warriors, how do we know, when to enough is enough, with regard to removing RIDS.

I was thinking about this while I was doing my mother's car yesterday and on the hood of the car she has some pretty good sized RIDS. I have no idea how deep they are but you cannot feel them by hand.

I wasn't trying to do any type of correction on them yesterday, but it got me thinking...

Using my G110, suppose I started with either M80 or M205 and made a few passes with no results. Stepped up to M83 and nothing. Finally pulled out the big dog M105 and hit the paint a few more times to no avail. Maybe even tried by hand and still nothing.

At what point do you give up and leave well enough alone? If I've seen NO improvement at all, should I continue hammering away? I'm never quite sure, when to say when.

    Good question!

Without a paint gauge, I'm afraid of going too far.

Typically if a pass or two of M105 doesn't take care of the problem I throw in the towel.

Esp if it is a daily driver anyway, cant worry too much.

Though a more focused pass or two by hand on the scratch with #105 can be done as well.

When you can see the engine, you should probably say "when."

Try doing this in front of about 20 to 30 people with no prior experience working on the car...

There is no sure fire way to know how much paint you can safely remove even with a paint thickness gauge because they measure the total film-build not just the clear layer of paint.

The two most helpful things you have is experience, including making mistakes so you know what not to do, and sometimes just dumb luck.

Better safe than sorry is a good rule to live by especially if it's not your car.

I guess if M105 cannot remove it, then what would? what is more aggressive than that anyways?

                        Good question, diamond cut?

I do 10 mins on each panel and then call it done and then wax it.

The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
