  • Mr. Clean Car Wash

These things are starting to pop up everywhere where I live and they are getting a lot of buzz. It is really annoying to me, having my small detailing business. Anyone ever actually been to one of these places to see what they do. They seem pretty high price was for a franchise IMO

This gets me: "Mr. Clean CEO and COO each have 30+ years of Car Wash Operation Experience"

So, for Mr. Clean, they hired ex-long term car wash owners to be in charge of household cleaning products who just now happen to be in the perfect position to set up car washes? OK...

it says they wash, polish, wax, dress tires etc in fifteen minutes, what good is all that if they dont even clay the car or at least evaulate the surface. And all that work gets done in fifteen minutes, i think they work by machine considering the fact that if 8 or 9 cars are being detailed at one time then they cant put a bunch of employees on one car, or maybe they just do quick work which results in a poor job. Sorry for going on and on but it kinda bothers me for them to think they are doin quality work when after all like roushstage said they do make household products and then they transitioned to the auto care line

          just dosent seem right

Exactly why it was brought up in my Marketing class (hence my thread about it). Some companies believe their name is so strong they can get anyone to buy something if it has the name on it. The first thing that was brought up was Gillette. They are a well-known and very popular brand. I guess they decided to make pocket calculators with their name on them. Didn't work out so well. Then these were brought up and the question was, would you go to a car wash by Proctor and Gamble, who mainly deal with household cleaning products, cosmetics, etc...?

                Their Prices seem okay too.
                That is just ridiculous.
I am sure some where on a forum there is a person from Mr Clean, and they see the problems people have with ordinary car washes so they answer that, with this.

If they are a bad and the Mr. Clean Auto Dry gizmo I bought, they should be out of business soon. What a waste that was.

                    Re: Mr. Clean Car Wash

The way I see it, you're fighting an uphill battle but Mr. Clean or any derivative thereof, is not really the problem, it's the people who use such services who are the problem.

I think with regard to car care, you have 4 or 5 sets of people which will always limit your customer base.

                    1. Those who just don't care about a clean car. These are the people you see whose cars are just in horrendous shape. Covered in gunk, filthy and smelly inside and they see no value in cleaning.

                    2. Those who want a clean car CHEAP. These are the people who will use the $5 drive through car wash. Since they don't car about things like swirls, a clean car is a clean car. To them, your car and theirs, looks the same (even though we know it doesn't).

                    3. Those who love their cars want them super clean but want a "deal". This is exacly like my sister. She pays about $35 for a hand wash and vacuum (she says they use lamb wool mits and natural chamois to dry). To her, the fact that she is paying $35 means she's getting quality work at a deal of a price.

                    4. The enthusiast (like me). Would never take his car through a drive through, but won't bring it to a pro, because I enjoy doing it myself. Detailing is one of my hobbies (along with fishing and golf), so I would never go to a pro, UNLESS I had major issues that I couldn't handle.

                    5. The enthusiast who either doesn't have the time or patience to detail. This is the person who understands the difference betweeen the quality of work you put out vs. all the other cheaper versions of "car cleaning".

**I think the only way you increase the number of people in group 5 is through websites like this and forums popping up all over the internet. 16 years ago, when I got my first car, nothing like this existed, so being all the way up in Toronto, getting good detailing advice was pretty tough. Nowadays, places like MOL, autopia, autogeek etc... are everywhere so I think with greater education, the likeliness of increasing group 5 is good.
