  • Underground garage detailing...

Okay, so by now must of the regulars know my tale of woe, with regards to how lousy the weather has been up north and my inability to detail my cars, but I have a possible solution, but I have some concerns.

My sister lives in a nice condo unit with an excellent underground parking garage. The garage is well lit, has electrical outlets but no water supply.

My plan was to go to the local DIY wash, rinse the car of the heavy debris and wash the car in her underground using ONR. Thereafter I was planning on doing any needed correction, or at the very least, getting a fresh coat of NXT 2.0 on my ride.

Here is the problem... her garage is notoriously bad for dust and exhaust fumes which settle on the car. My concern is that if I wash the car and dry it, by the time I get to putting on my LSP, I will actually get small particles of dust and exhaust fumes settling on the paint, which MIGHT lead to swirling/scratching the paint.

An example of what I mean...

If I was to wash my white car and leave it in her garage for about 4-5 hours, it would have a very thin film of black dust over the car. If I were to wipe my finger over the car, I'd have black crud on my finger.

So, what do you say, should I try it or just wait two more months?

What's the temperature in this garage? Keep in mind that as temps drop into the mid 50F range the drying time of NXT, etc will be lengthened, even with a very thin coat. Use of NXT and other Meguiar's waxes is not recommended at temps below about 55F for this, and other, reasons.

Add to that the fact that this garage is notorious for the fallout you mention, waiting another couple of months before waxing is probably prudent. A good, thorough wash isn't a bad idea though.

      Michael,

Great point, never even considered it. Outdoor temp is suppose to sky rocket to about 40F on Saturday. The underground might get up to 45 but I doubt any higher than that and even possibly lower.

        What is LSP?

Also, sounds like I'd just wait until spring. I know, I know, it's tough to wait. My car is begging me for a detail.

Last Step Product. Usually a wax or sealant. But it could be any product you apply last.

            Golden,

LSP is often easier to use, especially when you use synthetic sealants like NXT 2.0. Technically it is not a wax, so instead of saying "when I apply my wax", I'll say LSP.

ONR leaves some level of protection behind, so why not leave it at that until Spring rolls around? It's not that far away, anymore.

I routinely use ONR at 50 F in a garage. I have even waxed it at that temp. It seems like humidity is as important as temperature when it comes to LSP hazing. Lower humidity seems to be better at ANY temperature for me. I use liquids so maybe pastes behave differently.
