  • Need help on choosing products.

    About 7 months ago, i was intending to wax my car. The can i grabbed said turtle wax on top, and i never read the side. turns out it was compound. i ended up deploying before i could get it fixed. my plan now is to buy the G-100A, and try to fix it myself. so my question is, what exactly do i need to order/buy to fix the paint?

    Hi Genie,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

    There are a couple of factors that will determine what products and tools you'll need, here are a few,
    • Depth of the scratch or defect
    • Hardness of paint
    • Your skill and technique


    Without seeing you car's paint, or having the ability to do a test spot in person to determine what products will work best, I'll suggest two products of which chances are good one or both will get the job done.

    #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish
    #80 Speed Glaze

    Meguiar's teaches,

    Always use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

    So start with the Speed Glaze and if that doesn't work, substitute the #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish and test to see if that will work. If by chance neither of the above products remove the defect when applied using a W-8006 foam polishing pad on the G-100, then chances are good that the scratches are deep and/or the paint is very hard and it will require a rotary buffer to remove them properly.

    I would guess that odds are in your favor that the above combination will remove the compound induced scratches and any scratches or defects that it doesn't remove, it will improve to the point that you can hardly see them.

    Good luck, if you can take a before and after pictures and then share them on the forum I'm sure others will appreciate it as I know this same thing has happened to others. (Applying compounds by hand to clear coat finishes).

      I went over my car with the #80. I found it made a noticeable difference. But, the swirls are still there. They are not as obvious as before but when looked at properly you can still see them. My next step is to use the #83, and then follow with the #80. If it takes out the swirls i plan on applying NXT tech wax. I feel fairly comfortable using the G-100 now. But is there anything i should be cautious of in this process?

        Make sure that when you apply #83 you work slowly to give the diminishing abrasives the proper time required to break down. If only minor swirls currently remain, another coat of #80 may work. Whatever combination you choose to use, first do a 1' x 1' test spot and examine the results. If it looks good then you should do the entire car with that process.
