  • Dremel for Polishing?

    Hey All,

I just bought a dremel 300 and it came with a polishing pad and polish cream which is mainly used for small metals or plumping pipes. Could I use this to clean my Nismo exhaust pipes? Has anyone ever used a dremel to polish metal on a car before?

I haven't used it on car parts before, but have on other metal parts. The only problem i found was that the pad was too small and it was really hard to get consitant polishing on the entire surface.

I would try something like the Mother's PowerBall Mini, which is about $15 and attaches to a drill.

I have an older dremel moto-tool I tried to clean my aluminum alloy wheels with. It didn't work so well for me at least.

on a light job like your exhaust it might work very well.

my wheels have that 'black dots' look with heavy oxidation caused by baked on tar & brake dust for years. I ended up using Brasso polish since anything else wasn't abrasive enough to help. First I used a nylon brush and it was working well, until the brush melted. then I tried felt polishing cones, the dremel really didn't have enough power to keep these spinning enough to do the job, and on top of that they caught fire. I've yet to find anything capable of cleaning my wheels (except a brass brush) which does irreparable damage to the finish

Your pipes look in such good shape too, that it could almost be more of a hassle.

A quick claying, and some Nxt or Hot Rims metal polish by hand, buff it off, and you're set.

I agree with the above. I would just use a mothers ball with some polish. You might end up getting "buffer trails" on your pipes if you use t he dremel. I have a Dremel as well and the pad is definitely too small for a job like this. You don't want to risk ruining your exhaust pipes.

I agree. I'd just use a terry app. pad and some Mag & Aluminum Polish.

The tips are fine but I was more concerned with the pipes leading up to the exhaust tips. I will try the methods suggested above and update with the results. Thank you!

They look very nice but you can use it.
Some pro's use it when detailing bike for those small parts they need to polish

                  Pipes Look Great!!
One Idea is to use the Mothers PowerBall.
But I would,as always do a little test spot first.

You pipes look good. I would just do it by hand and you should be in great shape. The steps that Murr suggested should polish them right up. Those are the same steps that I use.

I tried some polish on my exhaust pipe once, didnt really make a big change like it does on the tip/muffler.

The Dremel would be perfect for some of my smaller polishing needs if you could use larger buffs. I've looked everywhere and I can't believe no one makes a 1/4" adapter. A die grinder would be overkill for my modest needs.

I would live the insides black cuz on my GTR I clean them and then a the same night they got this black stuff on them again and by the end of the week they are completely black its hard to maintain them...if your planing on cleaning them everyday then I would go to the trouble of cleaning the inside...I use the metal polish i think is the NXT metal polish and put it on a MF SS towel and go around the outside part of the pipes and I think thats good enought but I still did the inside part and it shined but the night I came back it turned all dark inside agian I guess its a thing that you have to do often to make it actually look good. I would only do this if I was going to a car show or like a meet or somethin.

I use the Dremel felt attachment to help polish watch bands. It works well, but it would take ages to polish something as large as an exhaust tip.

If you do get some light scratches on the tips, try some M105 and a terry cloth or microfiber towel. Then, you can follow it up with your favorite metal polish.
