  • Windshield De-Icer.....effects on paint?

    Gang,

Seen as we've had a cold spell and after working 12 hours on nights, we don't really want to hang out at the ol' lockup parking lot and spray our windshields down with de-icer and let 'er warm up a few then take off.

I don't get a chance to wash our cars as often when on nights with a peak temp of 35 degrees and it's dark when I get up.

With that in mind, anyone know of any long term effects of de-icer on paint as you know, it runs off onto the paint and I believe it's a chemical that prevents freezing obviously but not sure what it is.

    Just typing outloud.....

I have not noticed any problems.
My Dad has this cool Prestone stuff that you spray the night before to prevent icing on the windshield.
I on the other hand have a minute de icer that I believe is Rain X or very similar to Rain X. It smells a lot like it. It works fine.

It does wash easy, but looking at long term effects if not washed for a week or so.....

I'm hopefully going to give the Neon and Yukon a bath this weekend, weather pending.

it is a heatwave today. It is +18 now. You know it has been really cold when you wake up and have to double check the thermometer to see if it is 18 or -18.

But, I think the reason most windshield washer contain alcohol to keep it from freezing. It probably isn't the best for the paint but i don't think it does any lasting or majordamage. If it did people like us that live in cold weather would have major issues since it i will probably only wash my truck 2 or 3 times all winter.

I've had windshield washer / deicer on my pillars and roof for weeks. I've never run into any problems. When I am using it it's to clean the road spray off my window so I figured it gets diluted with that water.

                Morning,

I have used Rain-X De-Icer for years without a single problem. I even keep some in a spray bottle for those mornings where the wipers are frozen stuck to the windshield or for a little extra de-icing.

I also use the Prestone on my ungarage kept cars. It works just fine. I don't think anything bad can go wrong as long as your apply it yourself. I would never use the Windshield Wiper DeIcer because of the Overspray.

It is -4 Degrees here in Cincinnati, Ohio

I didn't think so either, but just curious as I never really use the stuff until this year.....
