  • Need quick answers....3M Ultrifina....

I know this is a Meg's board, and I'm sorry for posting this here, I just need some quick answers!

Working on a 2000 Porsche Carrera that has a full repaint. Paint is the absolute softest I have ever worked on. Nothing is able to finish this car out without buffer swirls or severe "tick" marks. I've spent the past 6-7 hours(last night and this morning) trying to figure out a final step for this car and nothing is working I have a bottle of 3M's Ultrafina and gave it a shot. Comes out perfect! Problem is, I have absolutely no experience with this product. I wiped it down with alcohol, and it still looks good. But I'm worried about long term.

Will this product some back to bite me in the butt? Will I get this car back with buffer swirls all over it?

I hate to post this here, but I believe I will get some honest answers from some of you guys, and I need some quick answers.

    Thanks!

I've used it b4 (with a rotary) and it finishes out great. That's what it's made to do. Don't worry. I spread it at a low speed, gradually up the speed, then gradually back down.
Finish off with no extra downward pressure at all and at a slower speed.
That's not to say you shouldn't check the results under a light.

I've recently had problems finishing some sensitive paints. The best solution I found was to use some M205 and a W9207 pad on the DA at speed 2.5.

If the speed was increased, then I noticed some micromarring.

      Just a thought...

yeah you should have no problem with ultrafina with a finishing pad. you if any imperfections you could finish with the DA

I've used it twice with great results. 3M Blue foam pad on rotary @1200.

I know President_Detail just did a black S2000 with it....he was having a lot of the same issues as you and said the Ultrafine and 3M UK pad worked great for him. Maybe shoot Prez a PM.

I do like the M205 a lot more though.

M205 is leaving severe buffer swirls, and when used with a da, it leaves severe "tick" marks. This paint is SUPER soft!

What pad are you using with the Superfina?

                FYI,

Here is the car Presidential Detail did where he was having similar issues...

I have one car like that in my family, it will take longer, but perhaps you should try doing your last finishing step by hand with a foam applicator pad and product like 205

Already been down that road.....no dice

I'm not exaggerating when I say this paint is soft. It is the worst I've ever seen!

Well it sounds like the 3M is working for you...this is one of the reasons I like to hang on to all my polishes, even if something new and better comes out.

Unsure. Owner has had this car about 3 years, and he didn't have it painted. So the paint is within 3-8 years old.

Just out of curiousity when did this person have their car repainted? Could it be that the paint hasnt fully cured yet?

                            Just throwing in out there.

                              So it's safe to wax.

The thing about really soft paints is that as soon as you can dial in your polishing process to get the finish to where you want it the next thing you want to do is get a slick wax on that paint to help prevent scratches when you wipe the paint any further.

Soft paints tend to get scratched and marred or scuffed very easily even when you, the detailer, are wiping off previous products or even dust before going to the next step.

So as soon as you can get to the wax step get a wax on the paint that makes the paint very slick. I used to take care of a single stage black AC Cobra and the paint was so soft that just looking at it the wrong way would put a scratch in it. I used M20 Polymer Sealant as soon as I had the #7 Show Car Glaze removed not as my finishing wax but as a wax to make the paint slick so any further wiping wouldn't put a scratch back in.

M20 dries fast and wipes off very easily and leaves a very slick finish.

After the M20 step apply whatever you normally would for your choice in LSP
