  • Wheel Wells

    Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I need to get my Wheel wells cleaned. They have a lot of buildup of dirt, salt and who knows whatelse. Anyways I have simple green on hand and my question is, do you recommend dilluted simple green for the wells? If not what do you recommend?

    Thanks,

    Re: Wheel Wells

I like cleaning them with All Purpose Cleaner. Diluted at 10:1. Then I Protect them with All Season Dressing.

        Re: Wheel Wells

Simple Green turned my last cars wheelwells a chalky dried out white. It took another year+ of regular cleanings with APC and dressing with ASD to get them back to being black/gray again.

          Re: Wheel Wells

Have read some posts where Simple Green has stained some wheels, (probably polished aluminum), so if you do use it be sure to remove the wheels and place them out of the way of any splatter.

Also have a variety of brushes on hand to agitate the cleaner. Our All Purpose Cleaner is a great general purpose cleaner and you should be able to order it from your local PBE store if they don't carry it in stock. Be sure to get the OSHA Approved matching spray bottle and the chemical resistant sprayer with it if you decide to get some APC

                  Re: Wheel Wells

I have used Super Degreaser on all the wheel wells that I have cleaned so far. I use it at anywhere from a 10:1 to a 4:1 ratio depending on how nasty they are. I have found that the use of a foaming spray head has added great dwell time so the product has time to really work into the nasty stuff. I have rarely had to scrub with anything other than an old cotton terry towel. I dress them with Water Based Dressing. I like saving the more expensive dressings like ASD for tires and trim. Your first or second daily drive will have the wells getting dirt tossed all up in them again. With WBD they remain black between washings and I don't waste my better dressings. Just my 2 cents.

                    Re: Wheel Wells

Simple Green has a very wide range of dilution levels and you have to be sure to use the correct one, per application. I just used Simple Green to clean the wheel wells on my Neon yesterday. If you use Simple Green, I'd use it at about 30:1 to start (1oz. S.G. to 1qt. water) and if for some reason it doesn't clean them good enough, bump it up to 10:1 (1oz. [1/8 cup] S.G. to 1 cup water).

To note, I also use a separate wash bucket with soap and water to use in conjunction with the S.G. I spray the wheel well down with the hose to remove any loose dirt/mud. Spray it down liberally with my cleaner and let it soak for about a minute, then use my brush with the soap/water solution on it and scrub, then rinse.

Is apc generally safe on all factory wheels (chrome or clear coat)?

Generally yes, but soap and water work best unless there is a specific need for something besides that to clean them.

I used to use SG a lot, but it turned some stuff in the car green! Then I discovered the now discontinued Carpet and upholstery cleaner and now use Eagle One All Wheel Tire cleaner and/or APC about 7:1. Spray, soak, agitate.
