  • Another Layering Question...

I've never tried layering before, but I have an idea I want to try this weekend. It seems to me that most layerings are either a wax over a wax or a wax over a sealant. I have another brand's cleaner wax I want to try, but I want to put either NXT 2.0 or M21 over it. Will this work or does the wax HAVE to go over the sealant? If I did it this way would the cleaner wax remove the sealant with its abrasives?

    Re: Another Layering Question...

Applying a cleaner wax over another wax or sealant will remove the previously applied product. In your case, with the BrandX cleaner wax, you would be forced to apply it first and the NXT or M21 over it. That's not a problem at all.

Don't look at this sort of experimentation so much as layering, though - look at it as a test of combining different types of products to see what you think looks best. A popular choice with Meguiar's products is to top M21 with M26. There really isn't a true need to do this, or mix and match any other combination, but the Car Crazy inhabitants of this world enjoy doing it, so what the heck - have fun!

And let us know what you think.

      Re: Another Layering Question...

It's more that I want to try the other product than anything else. If it was in the summer I would just use it, but I want the added protection of a sealant in the winter.

        Re: Another Layering Question...

I suspect that no one really knows the answer to your question; but consensual MOL wisdom supports the view that you should apply the cleaner wax first and then apply NXT/M21. I suspect that no one really knows what happens to the carnauba layering the cleaner wax has provided. Experimental evidence always seems to be absent in these discussions. Does the Meguiar's synthetic sealant add to this layering or does it replace it altogether? If you are really concerned about winter protection, then give NXT/M21 sufficient time to cure and crosslink (12+ hours) and then throw on another coat.
