  • 105, 205 and scratching black paint.

How do you remove 105 without putting scratches back in black paint? I get the paint perfect with 105 but when I remove the residue I put small scratches back in the paint.

I know I have to use the finishing polish to get the paint perfect but how do I keep it perfect when removing the polish before the lsp is applied?

Is it possible to get paint perfect before the LSP is applied or do I have to use a wax to cover the scratches that are put back in the paint when I remove the polish?

    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hi Ray

I moved this into Detailing 101 as it is a detailing related question, and best belongs here.

As for your problem: what are you using to remove the product?

Have you tried spraying some type of QD onto the paint before wiping?

How gentle, or rough are you being during the wiping?

I wasn't using the qd just a clean microfiber and wiping hard enough to get the polish off.

How good are the ultimate wipes?

If they are good, guess I need to get some of them but they are expensive.

        with what Mark said.
Make sure you are using a High Quality Microfiber, like Meguiars Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel.
From what I here the UQW are great, and a lot of people like them.

I agree with the above....what MF towels are you using? The cheaper ones can scratch some paints.

          What are you working on?

Well you shouldn't have to "rub hard" at all. I am going to suggest two things out of my personal experience that lend well to me: 1.) Use a supreme shine microfiber towel. (You can buy them in 3 packs), 2.) Mix up a bottle of 50/50 Last Touch and distilled water. Use that as a lubricating agent to remove polish or compound residue... (not for wax).

Give that a shot, and report back.

If M105 is difficult to remove, try using some M105 and a microfiber by hand to help remove the stubborn product.

I've tried it quite a few times and it does work very well.

                Thanks Guys,
I'll use qd and some ultimate wipes.

Ultimate or Supreme Shine should go the trick

Re: 105, 205 and scratching black paint.

If the paint you're working on turns out to be extremely scratch-sensitive, then it could be that besides using a premium quality microfiber polishing cloth that you could still see some light marring while wiping off any compound residue, if that's the case then do your best to wipe off the M105 residue and then move on to the next step.

Each step through the process you're paint care products will become less aggressive and the problem will go away or in a way fix itself.

I've come across this same type of problem on some cars where just wiping residue off could put a very light or shallow scratch backing to the paint. The idea is to understand this and move forward because the next step, the M205 polishing step will remove these light toweling/product scratches and be even easier to wipe off.

Often times polishing paint is a process and as long as you keep moving forwards in the process towards the goal it will turn out exactly as you want.

Just keep in mind the scratch-sensitivity of the paint each time you do any wiping off of product.

Be sure to fold your microfiber polishing cloths 4-ways before using them. This will not only give you 8 wiping sides, but also to provide some thickness of cloth between you hand and the paint and this will help to spread out the pressure from your hand.

                        Thanks fellows,
It was the microfibers I was using. They feel soft but they scratch paint. I got the ultimate wipes and the polish can off without a scratch. Ultimate wipes are great.

I can't believe how much the price has dropped. About 2 or 3 years ago they cost 6 or 7 dollars apeice. Now they cost less than $3.
