  • Fresh paint questions

Hey guys, I got my expedition back from the bodyshop on the 31st, and on the 4th I drove from TX to Colorado and encountered lots of snow and road salt. My question is since its too cold right now to hand wash it, is it ok to take it to a touchless car wash, or do you guys think the paint might be too soft and get blasted off? Also do you think the road salt did any damage to the paint since its been on the car for a few days now?

So the paint is approximately 8-10 days old?

I've never used a touchless wash but my guess is the water spray isn't of the pressure level that would blast fresh paint off the car unless it's a really cheap paint job.

Can you find a way to wash the car by hand? Maybe take your own car wash and mitt and bucket to a do-it-yourself car wash?

As for the salt questions, if we look at the question and answer in it's extreme, exposing fresh paint to salt probably doesn't help improve the appearance, so what's the opposite of improve?

Honestly, modern paints are pretty strong, your fresh paint could be just fine, you won't know till you get it clean and inspect.

        ok quick update,

I washed it today and just as i feared the salt and snow mix "stained" the new paint any clues on what i should use?

I have DACP do you guys think that might be too strong? on my wifes infiniti the dacp with an orange lc pad i was able to remove 100% of the swirls and like 95% of some the deaper imperfections

          Anyway you can post pictures?

I would swing it by your paint shop and show them and tell them you did nothing but wash it.....

Sounds like a job for our new M205 with either a finishing pad or a polishing pad, whichever gets the job done following our philosophy of,

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

Probably the yellow foam polishing pad.

Don't fret, you can fix it and we're here to help see you through to sucess....

here are the pics, the first one showcase the difference in the paint from the stained side and the clean parts of the fresh paint

the second picture shows the stains and the shade difference (they used to match exactly)

the third picture just shows more of the misc staining

you gotta look past the swirls to see the staining

M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish with a foam polishing pad should take care of the staining or dullness and most of the swirls and scratches. A cutting pad like you used on your Wife's Infinity will probably be too aggressive and while it will remove all the defects it may leave DA Haze or Micro-marring.

M205 would be a better option with a foam polishing pad on the 5.0 Speed Setting of your DA Polisher.

Then apply a pure polish like M81 by hand or with a finishing pad until it's safe to apply wax or a cleaner/polish like M80 with a polishing pad by machine or a foam applicator pad by hand.

This time of year is hard on a new paint job for a vehicle you have to put immediately back into service.

                          Re: Fresh paint questions

Just wanted to check. If it was through a touchless wash, I was just going to say it probably didn't remove everything. Sounds like the paint just needs a bit of cleaning is all (hopefully).

yeah, i use a touchless on my work truck, since its white, and it really doesnt need to be uber clean, just look good from 10 ft.

Im sure it will come off, i just need a day when its not cold or snowing, ala today

Missed the pictures earlier??? That streaking looks like water that dried on the paint from using a towel, or are you talking about those white spots that look like chips?
