  • Follow up w/ M83?

    Hey yall,

Working on my wife's 08 Volvo XC90 w/ the dealer installed swirl option. The car was in a small fender bender and while at the body shop, I asked if they would detail it (paint correction). After taking delivery, looked at the car, in a rush, didn't notice holograms on hood. Everything else looked ok, except the hood, which had holograms and some random scratches. It looks as if it was done w/ a buffer. I thought I'd try my hand at correcting problems. Washed, clayed, and M80 (two passes) via G110. The holograms are completely gone, but still has some random scratches. They did get better after each pass, but was wondering if I should step up to M83, or try one more pass with M80, or slap some NXT 2.0 on it and call it a day. My only concern about trying any more passes with the G110 is if they used a buffer, should I risk taking any more paint off? This is a daily driver so I understand it probably will never be perfect, but I am taking ownership of the washing process from now on, and would like to have a good platform to start out on. Sorry for the long post, and no pictars (camera busted).

    Thanks,
    TLH

Just in case you do not catch the typo, I think you meant to write that you did two passes with M80 and are now wondering if you should step up to M83. Am I right?

Is this going to be a daily driver for your wife?

If so, I wouldn't go all out to remove every scratch as daily drivers are going to get scratched, dented and dinged at some point in it's life time no matter how hard you try.

So if you've gotten most of the hologramming gone and are left with just a few scratches, I would wax it and call it a day like you said.

How do you like the car?

          Hey Ryan,

I think I will go ahead and call it good. Probably 98% of swirls are gone and 100% hologramming gone as far as i can tell.

As for the Volvo, she really enjoys it. It's FWD suv, which took some getting used to coming from a RWD Ford Expedition. About 15 months owning it and it's been bulletproof so far.

          Thanks for the replies.

            Re: Follow up w/ M83?

Tim Lingor did a great write up on a volvo car with hard as nails clear coat.

Crud, can't find it, must have been on the old site.

He used a compound I believe, either 84 or 85 but the swirls were bad.

80/83 is a great combo. New products such as 105/205 may be the "new" 80/83 in today's world.

Just so you know you cant wax fresh paint. You need to let it cure and full outgas before any protectant is put on it.

Paint on rear bumper from fender bender had more than 90 days to cure. Since the paint on the rear bumper was new, obviously it did not need correction. Swirls came from dealer. Only hologramming occured on the hood. Sorry, I did not make it clear in original post that the repair was being done to the rear bumper. See original post.

                Thanks
