  • The thickness of paint?

    For example..
If the thickness of the paint(5) + clear coat(5) is 10
then I polish my car and it is now 7...(paint(5) clear coat(2))

Will waxing my car increase the thickness of clear coat(back to 10)?
If not..what If I polish my car again..and again...

    Re: The thickness of paint?

Polishing does remove some paint (single stage) or clearcoat (2 stage painted newer vehicle).

Wax will in no way add clearcoat to the paint. It adds some form of protection, but it is not a replacement for clearcoat.

In theory, with aggressive products and methods you could eventually go through your clear or even the paint. But, with proper method and common sense you can safely polish without taking away too much.

    What are you working on?

What are you trying to accomplish?

For most people, removing enough paint is the problem, not removing too much. That is most people struggle with removing swirls and scratches, just spend a day reading all the threads with people asking for help removing swirls and scratches.

Removing swirls and scratches means removing paint, thus if you are not able to remove the swirls and scratches to your expectations, another way of saying that is you can't remove enough paint to your expectations.

Read this as it explains this i detail...

        What about m80 or m205...
I know these products make the paint looks richer & deeper...
That's mean making the paint looks richer&deeper would also make the paint thinner?

Yesterday I tried 2 pass of m105 by hand to remove some deep scratches...(not too long, but deep..My nails & fingers can feel it)
The result was pretty obvious.(But I could still feel the scratch)
I did not see any swirl after using M105, which is great(but maybe not enough light..)
But I am afraid to make the paint too thin...then I stopped

I have also polished the hood using m80, cannot really see the difference(deep finish)..The car is a champagne colored accord
1/3 of the hood each time, and the m80 dry(hard to move around) after around 2mins...
Am I applying too little M80?
I have seen the thread that you just put the M80 around the side of the G100
        And I did it too..

Also, I have been reading those useful threads for a few weeks..

If the car is clear coated then the ultimate goal is to get the clear coat as smooth and defect-free as possible. Doing this will enable you're eyes to best see the color coat underneath. With light colors, especially light colors that are clear coated you just can't get the deep wet shine like you can with black and dark colors.

So if you're getting the clear layer clear and shiny then you're doing the best thing you can and afterwards apply your favorite wax or paint sealant.
